RE: Disrespectful kids: What do you expect when you have a scofflaw superintendent, a non-tax paying city council president and a newly elected mayor who won't speak to the English speaking Americans in Lawrence... and you're worried about kids crossing against the lights??? They are clueless and adrift without adults to emulate.

To Disrespectful Kids, take another look at the "laws" you are saying are being broken. Regardless of do not walk lights and red or green traffic lights, in Massachusetts, the pedestrian, no matter how ignorant, has the right of way in all situations. If they step off the curb, it doesn't matter what color your light is or what the walk light says, they have the right of way and the LAW requires YOU to stop your car. Learn about things before preaching about them.

I like Honesty's take on this. Maybe you need work on reading skills. He/she was saying that the children/beasts/youth/animals of Lawrence dont look before they cross because none of the adults are role models and quite frankly don't look either. He/she was worried for their safety and called up the adults to become people to emulate and pay attention to their surroundings before the child gets killed.

    bobbyb42,
I guess you do not know the laws. The laws are only for crosswalks. If a pedestrian is not in a crosswalk, it is considered Jay walking.
CHAPTER 89. LAW OF THE ROAD

Chapter 89: Section 11. Marked crosswalks; yielding right of way to pedestrians; penalty

Section 11. When traffic control signals are not in place or not in operation the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right of way, slowing down or stopping if need be so to yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk marked in accordance with standards established by the department of highways if the pedestrian is on that half of the traveled part of the way on which the vehicle is traveling or if the pedestrian approaches from the opposite half of the traveled part of the way to within 10 feet of that half of the traveled part of the way on which said vehicle is traveling.

No driver of a vehicle shall pass any other vehicle which has stopped at a marked crosswalk to permit a pedestrian to cross, nor shall any such operator enter a marked crosswalk while a pedestrian is crossing or until there is a sufficient space beyond the crosswalk to accommodate the vehicle he is operating, notwithstanding that a traffic control signal may indicate that vehicles may proceed.

Whoever violates any provision of this section shall be punished by a fine of not more than $200.

Whenever a pedestrian is injured by a motor vehicle in a marked crosswalk, the department of state police or the municipal police department with jurisdiction of the street, in consultation with department of state police if deemed appropriate, shall conduct an investigation into the cause of the injury and any violation of this section or other law or ordinance and shall issue the appropriate civil or criminal citation or file an application for the appropriate criminal complaint, if any. This section shall not limit the ability of a district attorney or the attorney general to seek an indictment in connection with the operation of a motor vehicle which causes injury or death and which violates this section.

In answer to "What a Job", picture this, a day of torrential downpours or heavy snow, construction on a major road continues unabated as people fly by at speeds exceeding what they should be for normal, dry road conditions. The officer directing traffic steps out to slow down the traffic and is pinned between the speeding car, which slowed down but still slid and a nearby piece of equipment. Picture this, a blistering hot day in the 90's, no water, no time or place nearby for bathroom access for hours. Duty officers are there because one is required for the action taking place and in addition to the very few times there is no traffic, the above scenarios also play out. Please try to use common sense, which would indicate that you don't judge the entire detail by your "drive by" or all other details by that standard either. Then, place your husband or wife or son or daughter out in the middle of traffic in much less than ideal conditions for hours and let me know then how you feel about it.

I know, because the above situation is the most likely. I would love to get paid a minimum $200 to sit around for a few hours look into a hole or watch people work.

    Robots?

The army uses the best practices available to them to handle IEDs. That may or may not include robots. It would be great if all the IED situations could be handled with robots but that is not the case. It takes specialized training and that usually involved human interactions. We have the best people in the world in our armed forces. They know were they can use robots and where they cannot.

The key seems to be to get to and elimimnate the people setting up the IEDs. If that happens then there is no need for the robots.
