This story is already out of date. After voting not to send this charter to Concord for review, the Charter Committee went upstairs away from the television cameras and made major changes.

Maybe this reporter should investigate whether a meeting posted for the Knightly Room and televised that moved to a small conference room and was not televised was legal?

This moving the meeting and making these changes without the public being able to watch stinks to high heaven.

Whatever S.Campbells opinion is about this is the way I'm voting. He seems to be the only one looking out for the town's best interests,especially financially.

I support the town council form of governing for Salem, assuming they are rolling the school funding decisions into it. Having them as separate entities within the town has caused our tax rates to fly off the handle and explode willy nilly. We need a form of govt that puts all the towns services under one umbrella for a cohesive master plan and responsible long term spending.

This form of government allows for corruption and back door dealing by seasoned town politions. Bob campbell has lost hid mind with all this ideoligical
bull he his proposing. Thank you steve campbell for having the interest of the taxpayers/voters in mind on this charter commision. And Please, Please people of salem vote no on this charter change and protect your right to be heard on town meeting day, and please get of your butt and participate in your town government. The seasoned pilitical hacks have been dreaming of this day, we cannot afford to have our voice be taken away on town meeting day. Please reject this charter change so we all can be part of our town government. Shame on bob campbell.

Salem is a disaster!! First off, why are these residents forced to pay the salaries of police that pull people over for BEEPING THEIR HORN!! YES!! I got PULLED OVER for BEEPING MY HORN!? Are these clowns serious!? And they are forever crying about their insufficient police station!? Wth!! You gotta be kidding me! Salem's police force is disgusting, fithly, grimey, illegal, shady and ridiculously oppressive! They are modern day nazis!!

Salem needs to come out of the 1777 closet and become a CITY! They need ONE LEADER to slam a gavel and get this dump where it belongs! It's a shame to see how much of a wreck this town is! Smh.

pony boy you are so true, the salem police department is run by crooks that would make Al Cappone PROUD, the organized crime in salem is out of control, and needs to stop but we are lost and doomed, the police can not police themself and who will do it, the only way is an appointed commission in the town AKA citizend review board and most of all a town manager with the will, Male or female who will act against or on behalf of the police department what ever is needed, BUT i to this date have seen no one who has that WILL to do that out of fear from what I have seen.

PonyBoy, having Salem go from town council form of government to a city/mayor would be the worst thing for Salem. Next time lay off the horn for a bit.

Jeff, presently Salem is a Town Meeting form of government, with a Board of Selectmen and Town Manager. I'm assuming you support this form of government. Its the purist form of democracy in our nation today, and very unique too New England. When People from other regions of this country experience it for the first time, they find a deep respect and appreciation for how a true democracy works, something that some of us in New England take for granted.

With a Town Council form of government, which is what the Charter Commission is recommending to the voters, and also is just a smoke and mirror tittle for a City form of government, will take allot of rights that voter now have, away, all for the sake of controlling the towns agenda by nine elected officials, and all for what they would call expediency and the streamlining of town government.

I'm hoping the voters will stay with our existing form of governance.
