The Eagle-Tribune: Republicans should consider supporting Obama

    Nobama. Keep the change.

    Barack Obama will tax ya

Can John McCain win? Look, I've never cared for the guy. He wasn't my guy in this fight and I've never made any secret about that.

But now I've got to be with him - even though the odds are still against him, although not nearly as long as they were awhile ago. What will tip it? This election all depends whether the "victims" finally outnumber the non-victims.

There's an old saying in politics. If you rob Peter to pay Paul, you can always count on Paul's vote. Barack Obama doesn't know much, but he's figured that out. The question is: Are there still more Peters than Pauls (all of whom feel entitled, because they are, of course, victims)?

Consider the Democratic convention. Even Joe Biden, that shameless buffoon from America's newest twin city, Scranton-Wilmington, tried to stake out his own personal turf in Victim Nation.

You see, Joe Biden stuttered as a youth. The introductory video told us that. Then his son repeated it. Then the great man himself c-c-c-c-copped to it.

In Victim Nation, nobody ever got a break, even if they've gotten nothing but free rides their entire lives. No graduate of Harvard Law School can credibly claim to have been oppressed by a "mean" nation. So in their speeches, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama and Deval Patrick all just ignored the inconvenient truth about where they picked up their second Ivy League degrees.

It's amazing. These biographical rewrites are like a Witness Protection Program for Harvard Law grads who want to change their identities in order to pass themselves off as victims in good standing.

The whole Democratic convention was like that ancient TV show "Queen for a Day," in which three weepy housewives would each try to top the others with tales of domestic woe.

The faux bathos in Denver was what made Sarah Palin so refreshing on Friday. When she started listing her kids, you cringed if you'd read about her infant son with Down syndrome. After four nights of Rocky Mountain Queen for a Day, you just assumed she'd Biden-ize the story.

But when she got to her infant son, she said nothing about his affliction. Then she introduced her husband, not even mentioning that he has Inuit blood. That makes the Palins, gulp, multiracial. Imagine any Democrat in Denver neglecting such a perfect opportunity to play the race card. You can't.

Todd Palin is someone who actually works for a living, as opposed to the Democrats' "working families," many of whom don't really work, and whose taxes Barack promised to cut, which will be difficult, considering most of them don't pay income taxes to begin with.

By contrast, Todd Palin has two real jobs. He's no "community advocate" or some paper shuffler in "HR." The guy is a commercial fisherman and he also works in the oil fields. Naturally the Beautiful People scoff.

The Democrats and their mainstream-media minions are keeping a close eye on the Weather Channel this morning. It's no secret what they'll do if Gustav lands a direct hit on New Orleans. It'll be all victim, all the time, all week.

Remember Stutterin' Joe Biden's acceptance speech, in which, to no one's surprise, he invented a whole series of imaginary kitchen-table conversations, one of which involved "Mom" moving in with her kids "now that Dad's gone"?

Wouldn't it be great if Sarah Palin points out in her speech that one reason Mom can't afford to live in her own house anymore is because her property taxes have tripled to pay for the salaries and benefits of avaricious public-sector union members?

Talk about the real victims in Victim Nation. It's the people who are going to have to pick up the tab if Barack wins - the taxpayers.

Again, the recurring question: Are there still more of us than there are of them?

Written by Howie Carr as it appeared in the Boston Herald on 8/31/08.

I'm sorry, but does the money you pay for education, transportation, health care, police, fire, social security, libraries, parks, and the numerous other public services in any way prevent you from using them? The nation does not consist of two distinct groups, taxpayers and users of public goods. They are one and the same.
The rich get paid over and over again with Bush/McCain tax cuts.In the end, a greater percent of the tax burden gets shifted onto the middle class. You may think that check they cut you is worth something (although most people just use it to pay off debt or buy crap at WalMart) but in the end, it evens out to hurt the middle class expect for the top percentiles of the middle class who get shifted up.

I have asked this question repeatedly and not gotten an answer from any McCain supporter. John McCain has promised to bring fiscal responsibility back to Washington.
What spending John McCain will cut to balance the budget and pay for his tax cuts plus the already staggering Bush deficit? Do not say earmarks, because earmarks make up less than 1% of the federal budget and about as much as we are spending in Iraq every month.

Class based handouts- like tax cuts for the rich, right?

Hey Jeff, can you answer my question about McCain's plan to balance the budget?

  • JL · 1 year ago
    my2cents:

Obama gets into office, and your 2 cents will quickly be devalued to .05 cents.

If Obama got his way, we would in fact become the equivalent of a third-world country, with a large swath of the population entirely dependent on the government for assistance. That assistance would be paid for with the high taxes that we, the working people of this country would be forced to contribute under Obama's plan.

Another one of Al Franken's morons - all talk no action while BS'ing the public.

    How's Air America doing?
  • kat333 · 1 year ago
I don't like either candidate and it comes down once again to choosing the best of two evils as other alternatives are not on the presidential ballot in NH.

A few things guaranteed if Obama is president:
    1) More dependency at the expense of the Average American. More free handouts for people who don't want to work hard and prosper. Average Americans who work hard with 1 or more jobs will have to foot the bill for this with increased taxes.

    2) Treating people as non-equals will be alive and well via affirmative action.

It looks as though more people will choose to rob Peter to pay Paul, at least that's what most of the polls are saying today. Four years from now, Americans are going to wonder what they've done to America to make it a 3rd world country.
  • Really? · 1 year ago
As opposed to handouts for the rich? Corporate tax breaks and loopholes? McCain's tax cuts are just another huge handout to the rich with a small payoff to make people think they're getting most of the savings. The Average American is middle class, making about $50,000 a year. They need help with basic education, college, health care and transportation services. Obama's tax plan would benefit them. McCain's would shift a greater % of the tax burden onto these folks.

Affirmative action exists for women too, not just minorities. And Obama, recognizing his daughters have advantages white kids from lower income places do not, has promised to change affirmative action to a class-based rather than race-based system, something I wholeheartedly support.
  • Really? · 1 year ago
Well, Kat, Obama has discussed changing affirmative action to a class-based rather than a race-based system. He recognizes some black children (he used his daughters as an example) have advantages poor white children do not.

I know a bit about AA and college admissions, and if what you tell me about your kids is true, you have NOTHING to fear. If your kids are valedictorian and salutatorian at a decent sized public school (I won't ask which one, but all the public schools in the Merrimack Valley fit into this category) and have SAT scores corresponding to their grades they will get into almost any college they apply to, and will certainly not be pushed out in favor of a black/Hispanic kid with mediocre grades/SAT's. As a mother of two overachieving kids, you should also know many schools and local organizations will give your children hefty scholarships (apply for every single one you can find), and might want to read up on Obama's American Opportunity Tax Credit.

I am applying to law school (visit any message board on law school admissions and you'll find dozens of heated debates on the merits of AA) soon and trust me, your fears are way overblown. Affirmative action in undergraduate admissions is more of a "tie-breaker," just like AA for the rich (or legacy admissions, see Bush) or for athletes- from my experiences and knowledge a kid applying to the top undergrad schools has more to fear from legacies/athletes taking undeserved spots than minorities.
  • kat333 · 1 year ago
To Really? You're right about the republicans but as I said in my original post, I'm voting for the better of two evils. I'm for a flat tax and sealing up the loopholes.

My parents grew up poor but worked hard to get somewhere in life. They didn't ask for handouts. I, in turn, did the same and expect my two kids to work hard to get ahead in life. Why should we be punished with higher taxes?

The rich you are speaking about are the top 5% of Americans. I pay my own family health insurance, a mortgage, and bills like everyone else. We have a family household income of over $50,000. I am trying to figure out how to send my two girls to college in two years because we can't afford it. They are number 1 and 2 in their class but that won't matter if Obama is president because some kid who doesn't work as hard as my kids do will be chosen above them because they meet the skin color of the week. Not fair. ANY child, regardless of color or sex should get into college if they work hard. My question is what happened to personal responsibility and working hard?

I don't think so. I didn't think that living in Indonesia and Hawaii as a wee lad qualifies you to be president, and this is NOT an OJT Position!
  • Really? · 1 year ago
But living in Alaska, where there are more moose then people, except for the FIVE YEARS she spent pursuing a JOURNALISM degree at such prestigious universities like North Idaho College or Hawaii Pacific qualifies one to be second-in line for the Presidency behind a 72 year old man? If it took her five years I don't think she was just studying at those schools. Or that executive experience gained as mayor of a town about the size of Boxford, where both of the people who ran for the office after her were members of her own family? Or as governor of a state that draws almost 80% of its revenues from a single, finite resource the rest of the country cannot rely on, and has one city more populous than Methuen? Sure, I feel real comfortable voting for McCain-Palin.
  • Mccain for President · 1 year ago
Wait a minute, does a prestigious ivy league school identify who the correct candidate should be? So in your own words you just said that Prez Bush is more than qualified, but then again you all think he's an idiot. Blah, blah, blah, you liberals are all full of hot air! You never back up anything.
  • Really? · 1 year ago
President Bush's track record since his legacy days at Yale until he became Texas gov was abysmal. He tanked every company his daddy and his rich friends handed him. He was also, like I said, a legacy, a trust fund baby who in eight years has not even demonstrated he can give a good speech, never mind understand the nuances of politics. Obama worked hard, transferred to Columbia, worked even harder to get into Harvard Law (not something just anyone can do) and has demonstrated he is intelligent and articulate.

Yes, you should to be smart to be President. It's only practical to entrust our country to a person who is more than just an average man or woman. Ideally, the President should be more intelligent than 99% of the people in this country. The Founding Fathers were not people you would "sit down and have a beer with," nor were they trust fund babies. They were accomplished, highly intelligent, well read and part of a very tiny (elite) segment of society.

Your nose is growing! You are so full of it, I can't stop laughing. Nice try though! The only change your going to see in an Obama administration is the "change" in your income taxes. Hope it makes you "feel good" and "positive"! You wacky, moonbat!
  • Stiv · 1 year ago
Obama is nothing more than an empty suit, spouting empty rhetoric. Like most moonbat liberals, he speaks in feel-good phrases, but doesn't actually define any of his policies. One thing Obama has admitted to is a tax hike on the middle class to fund universal health care. Believe me, if you think managed care is screwed up mow, wait until the government gets involved. He also pledges to eliminate most funding for our military. Gee, talk about creating jobs Senator? How about all of the jobs defense contractors will lose when you cut all of the funds?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that Republicans give tax breaks to large corporations. Yes, that is true, and those tax breaks help those companies be able to afford new hires. When crazy liberals tax those businessmen heavily, all businesses large and small, from giant retailers to mom & pop stores can't afford to hire many people. Do liberals want to create jobs? NO! They want you to not have a job so you can get on one of their taxpayer funded programs!

Obama is a nightmare! A potential four year nightmare!

Liberals don't want anyone to actually succeed. If anyone was actually helped by this party, they'd be outta business. They will always keep those dependent on the government and its programs.
  • ANTIHAVERHILL · 1 year ago
THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.

Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.

He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.

Obama's Senate Bill S.2433 - A UN Global Tax on the U.S. Senator Obama wants to tie the U.S. into spending millions, if not billions, on Global Poverty. His Senate Bill S-2433, along with the already passed House version, never mentions the money involved, and for good reason. They don’t want anyone to know how much the money would be. The attempt at hiding the money in this Bill is ingenious to say the least.

"It will serve the Republicans right to have the NUCULAR OPTION used against them when we have a large Democratic majority in both houses. And it will be great to see how Hillary behaves when she no longer has to suck up to the voting public. She might be fantastic as a justice. And she won't be in Bill's shadow any more. She can finally do something Bill hasn't done (and will never be able to do).

    Bill Nolan | 05.23.08 10:57 AM"

And: "I can't recall when "the best legal mind" was ever a parameter to be used to choose a SCOTUS nominee. Look at Clarence T or more recently Roberts/Alito. It is always a a policy decision, not a legal decision. Hillary has drifted to the Right because she wanted to appear more electable. Without having to cater to ignorant voters, she can be as liberal as she truly was in Bill's first term. That would be a thorn in the Repubicans' side for 20 plus years!

    Bill Nolan | 05.23.08 11:45 AM"

I think in the times we are unfortunate/fortunate to live in, that McCain is the only choice. We must be strong with potential foriegn enemy countries. This holds true when Ike was elected after WWII. I know the Soviets weren't happy with that. As well, McCain is more center than Bush "Who also had a job to do". I'm certainly not for war mongering but, some of these Nations only respond to strength. Your best offense is a strong defense!

It is very hard to pick just one person to run a country of our size. Both men have good and bad points and, for me, it comes down to weighing who does the most double talk and whose decisions show the most morality and thought for others' rights. Obama's stance on abbortion is that he supports that it is the woman's decision what should happen to her body--he has not changed his stance on this and a lot of what is contributed as his words actually comes from the media.
McCain Is against abortion, but for women's rights. He's against killing innocent children, but pro killing other people's children to win a war for oil. Hmm, tough decision.

I am an Independent that has almost always voted for the GOP, but I also am going for Obama this time. The reason for this is the fact the christian right has overtaken the GOP and their views are to fundamenalist for a mainstream republican. They know they need to hijack the party to have any influence on the national stage, as breaking away would severely diminish their effectiveness. This has tarnished the Reagan Republican dynasty to rubble.

Obama has real family values, he has a mainstream sense of values that I connect with. I do not recognise the GOP since the days of Bush and Rove. Obama has a direction and a plan for the future economy of this country, whereas McCain doesn't believe we have an economic crisis at all.

I wanted to vote McCain, but he is to closely aligned w/ the Bush policies of the past 8 years and his VP running mate, Palin, both lacks family values and any sense of crediblity to lead. Had he picked Pawlenty of MN, or even Olympia Snow of ME, I might have seen a chance to regain the GOP back from the fundementalist right wing christians who are as dangerous as islamic extremist.

Obama- our last chance to reverse the curse of the Bush family attempting to end the world with bullying and fear.

Where do I start. It seems that there was not a problem with the War in Iraq until the last presidential election. Don't forget, all you people who won't admit it now, 60-70% of Americans were in favor of the war. Don't forget, G Bush went on TV and announced that this was going to be a long campaign. All was good until the last election when all of a sudden, you Libs began to degrade and denograte your country. Remember the 70's. Truth is, you love your freedom but forget how it came to you. Sometimes freedom falls at your feet in the form of your neighbor's blood, sweat and tears.
Mistakes were made, but show me a war in which they were not. During WWII we lost more men preparing for the invasion of D-Day than we have lost in this entire war both in Iraq and Afghanistan. If the libs were around back then, I wonder where we'd be or what language we'd be speaking today.
Our brave men and woman are fighting to preserve the rights of freedom, both here and across the globe. That has been the American way for over 200 years. Now, I would like you to be around the day Nobama pulls our troops out before the war is completed. I want you to be there when that poor mother learns that her child died in veign. Another six months or a year to really complete the job and you're willing to pull the plug, only to have ome other generation deal with the next tirant.
Under Clinton, these rogue countries were thumbing their noses at us. It was one debacle after another. We had the World Trade Center bombings, embassies bombed, hostages taken off cruise ships and murdered and our war ships were bombed. What was the response. I'll tell you the response. It was to lay a red carpet from Boston to the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon and other locations. It was an invitation to do as they please, because after all, God forbid we should strike at the heart of the problem for fear we might cause bad relations with France and the like. At least under Bush this has not happened again. My kids sleep well at night, as do yours. And to those families that have sacrificed with the loss of a son or a daughter, or to those families who have loved ones serving in the military, whether over seas or not, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Now go out there and do the right thing. Don't be misguided by the leftist media that forces so much of their side down your throat that you start to believe it. Do your own homework. Read about history and how it always repeats itself if you let it. Lets start standing up for what is right in this world and don't let those little rogue nations start pulling the strings.
    Go McCain!!!

Many people believed in the Iraq war, as you said, until they realized it was declared with lies.

From Bush's national address to start the war:

Our nation enters this conflict reluctantly, yet our purpose is sure. The people of the United States and our friends and allies will not live at the mercy of an outlaw regime that threatens the peace with weapons of mass murder.

We will meet that threat now with our Army, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and Marines, so that we do not have to meet it later with armies of firefighters and police and doctors on the streets of our cities.

Now that conflict has come, the only way to limit its duration is to apply decisive force. And I assure you, this will not be a campaign of half measures and we will accept no outcome but victory.

    Each paragraph is a lie;
1- threatens peace with weapons of mass murder. -NO WMD
2- meet the threat now....so we won't have to meet it in our cities. - NO TIES BETWEEN IRAQ AND TERRORISTS THAT WOULD HIT OUT CITIES
    3. -not be a campaign of half measures- CLEARLY IT HAS BEEN BEMOANED BY ALL OF THE TOP MILITARY COMMANDERS THAT WE WENT IN WITHOUT A GOOD PLAN, NOT ENOUGH TROOPS, ETC.

So while I believed in the war, wanted saddam gone, was waiting for the glorious welcome from the liberated citizens of Iraq, etc.

And it was liberals who started WWI and WWII, so where would we be, as you ask, if the liberals were around back then- I guess we'd be here enjoying the freedoms you talked so much about, thank you democratic leaders.

Now I 100% believe we must finish the job in Iraq, to leave now would be like walking out of the dry forest after dropping a box of lit matches. I also believe in a strong military, projecting force around the world and that this country, for good or bad, is needed to be the major enforcer in this world. But your rhatoric and inspirational speach is full of typical talk radio and fear mongering ideas about the crazy left liberals and the end of all things American.

I have considered McCain in the past as a man willing to straddle the differences of the otherwise crazy lefties and the fundamentalism freakies of the right, because no one, come election time, can consider that there is some middle ground and a vote for one over the other automatically makes you the farthest from center loon there is, and all facts are skewed and recited to prove some point about the end of the world is coming if we vote X or Y. It's getting old and boring and shows that a person can not think critically for themselves, only can recite the parties standard credo like a zombie.

Point out I did it too, whatever, but rousing Bill Pullman-like speeches are for Hollywood.

    To McSame08:

Do you have children? Do you know what they are doing every second of every day? People do not "allow" their children to become impregnated or to do the impregnation; it just happens, and it can happen to anyone. I also didn't realize that hockey players were somehow members of the "lessers" in the gene pool. You might want to call Ray Bourque or Bobby Orr and mention that to them.

    I'll repost this here too...

Obama chides McCain for his Hollywood-like celebrity, yet it is the same Hollywood that is crowing for Obama. I can't take my political advice from a group of celebrities famous for playing make believe. I think someone else played make believe last week as he stood in front of a series of Greek columns trying to portray himself as the second coming of MLK. Mr. Obama, you are no MLK. That was nothing but a self indulgent display of utmost conceitedness. Obama has NO experience to lead this country, none. His record is spotless because he has yet to get his hands dirty. The only thing more disturbing to me than this was that Democratic rally, err, I mean funeral for Paul Wellstone.

We need an ability to cross party lines to get things done. It won't happen. McCain gets bashed from both sides of the aisle when he tries to do it. Obama just wouldn't do it...he is too much of a liberal party-line guy. So to compare them both, I'd rather have those that have tried and succeeded than those that would not even consider bipartisan ideas.
  • Stiv · 1 year ago
As far as philosophy goes, Senator Obama is convinced that the federal government should be in control of income distribution and, to some extent, should regulate the free marketplace. That is a classic liberal position, and Obama promotes it well.

The Senator also believes that poor Americans have a basic right to free health care and monetary supplements from the government with no strings attached. The American substance abuser, for example, would derive the same benefit as a hard working, laid off worker would. Again, classic liberalism. No judgments made regarding entitlements.

    God help him.

In her acceptance speech the other night, Palin, in an attempt to show what a budget minded reformer she is, bragged that she sold the former governor's plane on Ebay. Later, McCain mentioned on more than one occasion that part of her speech, adding that she sold it on Ebay at a profit.
The truth is, after three failed attempts to sell the $2.7 million plane on Ebay, she found a private broker to sell the plane for $2.1 million, a nice $600,000 loss.
Why did they feel the need to lie about this?

Go to Google and take your pick, plenty of links there to pick from.
The point you did not address is why are McCain and Palin lying about selling the plane on Ebay for a profit? They could say they dumped the plane at a loss to avoid paying the cost of keeping it grounded, but I guess that didn't sound good enough, hence the lies.
  • MjB · 1 year ago
First of all, your link is to an opinion piece which links to a Washington Post piece about the plane.

In regards to the plane, in the end there is a profit. There is no more fuel costs on the plain, no maintenance. They don't need to pay the pilot(s) any more. No costs to hanger the plane, landing fees... I bet they made up that 600k in a short amount of time by not having the plane.
  • JL · 1 year ago
    Realist,

I asked for a *credible* link, not an opinion about an opinion. If there are "plenty of links to pick from," why this particular one?

This link is written by Steve Benen, a partisan liberal currently blogging for the Washington Monthly, another liberal blog/e-zine that is long on hysterics and hyperbole, and short on facts.

I am curious. I want someone...anyone really...to tell me why they would vote for a ticket that included Sarah Palin when as mayor of her small town, she took a budget that had a significant surplus and, when she left a few years later, the same town was $20M in debt and still dealing with litiagation on issues she left behind, that may cost them even more. She didn't borrow the money to build a water treatment plant that the town lacked. She didn't use the money to develop a drainage system that would solve a long term problem. Gov. Palin built a sports complex that dispite her assurances of paying for itself, still is a financial drain years after she left that town. It is well documented that she did such a poor job the town forced her to hire an administrator.
There is a lot of name calling on this board but can anyone tell me why they would support this VP choice when confronted with these facts?
I don't want someone to tell me why not to vote for Obama, I am asking why someone would vote for Mccain with Gov. Palin as part of the ticker?

and lastly, making sure I check out everything I did look up the letter I found on Anchorage Daily news from Anne Kilkeeny on snopes
    http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/sarahpalin.
this was from a women who is from the same small town. Here is a quote from the commentary:
"Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6
years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over
33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the
City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation
(1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a
regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she
promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they
    benefited residents."

As a Air Force Vet and a Conservative, I will be voting for Obama, and will be proud to do so!. I am sickened by the Bush/Cheney/McCain approaches to war and the economy. I spent most of my time overseas, and returned in 1998. I can't believe how far the right wing has destroyed the American Middle Class because of their desire for cheap workers and to force their brand of religion on everyone. They are the greatest part of the illegal alien problem too, as they are the ones that actually recruit them while they are still in their home countries. Yes, they actually place orders for how ever many they need, pay the coyotes to smuggle them in, and then employ them here. This has been going on at least since the 1980s when it was a great deal of Asians imported illegally to work in poultry and hog farms in the Deep SOuth and hispanics in the Mid West. In the North, we get the ones from Eastern Europe that blend in easier, and often work seasonally at summer resorts. I will be voting for Obama, and will be proud to do so!

Silly Frank. You are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts. (Sen D. P. Moynihan)
With Liberman (who is hardly a Democrat) the Dems hold the majority...without him they don't...and it is hardly a reasonable argument that the Dem's held the majority in any strategic sense given the fact that Liberman as his actions prove is basically a Republican -- His choice, althought it seems pretty dishonest to ask Obama to campaign for him when he needed his coattails and after he did now campaigns against him.

Silly Frank, ask your mom to read you a real newspaper once in a while, althought this is quite diverting knocking down such tripe. Now a True Republican (and true patriot) like Uncle Sam...that is a reasonable person I would truly enjoy debating the policies of true conservatives.
