The Eagle-Tribune: Mother, son reject plea bargain in Lawrence underage drinking case

  • personwithanopinion · 1 year ago
Bottom line here......this mother provided a "safe" haven for underage drinkers which many, many parents do...and I include a particular city official....please, just because a parent is a city official doesn't mean they follow the law!! Their reasoning is that the kids are going to drink anyway, so it might as well be at home. Would there be more teenage deaths if this philosophy was not utilized by some parents?
At Hampton Beach, parents rent the cottages, supply the alcohol, and leave them to party away!! Is this the best way for kids to sow their wild oats and experiment with alcohol? What is the best way to handle this dilemma? Parents need to be vigilant and talk, talk, to your kids and not try to be the "hip" parent. I always tell my kids that these same situations will, someday, be theirs. In the end, the ultimate price was paid....a son was lost....no amount of should'a could'a's helps now.

I find it offensive she can be a citizen and live here for years and not speak English. It is all a charade !!!!! She doen't WANT to be an American. Call me a racist. I don't care anymore. Try pulling this in Russia or China. You think they cater to you because you don't speak the language and don't want to learn ??? She turned down 3 months. I hope she gets 3 years !!!!!
  • vwjetta · 1 year ago
In the country that has been voted the most 'free' country in the world, the place where my ancestors came here from, If you don't learn the primary language of the country (Finnish) the best job you're going to get is a cleaning job at a hotel. Despite a majority of the country being fluent in both Finnish and English, it is frowned upon not to know the language of the country. There is no welfare 'aka pop out another future criminal as young as physically possible to get free money at the expense of the tax paying citizens' so if you don't learn the language, you're going to get deported. If you immigrate to Finland, you must have a job the whole time you are there or else you will be deported.

That is how it should be here. If you don't have a job, and you can't speak the native language after several years, then YOU HAVE WORN OUT YOUR WELCOME AND YOU CAN KISS YOUR @SS GOODBYE!

I agree chimpy. However it is more common now for teenagers to drink on the regular. I graduated high School in 2003. I started drinking with older kids on sports teams as a freshman. I obviously do not suggest this behavior but it is more and more common for teenagres to drink. That being said this does not excuse the mother who should not be condoning this in there home. And if she does allow this in her home it is a bad choice, but by allowing this in her home she should not allow these CHILDREN to leave. That is the most concerning part. It is not right to allow children to drink however if you do you should not allow them to leave at the very least.

She might now speak English but I'm sure she know's the laws and what is right and wrong. "Now they waste our money by US paying for thier lawyers !!! ope they now get the full year in jail."

Ummm....we pay for the full year in jail as well.. big dummy! Personally, I don't see anything wrong with an 18 year old having a beer... we can go to Iraq and kill innocent people at that age, why can't we have a damn beer?? The mistake was letting him drive home... being IRRESPONSIBLE. With 2000 cabs in Lawrence, why wasn't a cab company called to avoid this from happening? It's only $4.00 instead of costing this poor kid his life. You cannot blame them fully for his death though because he was a grown kid himself and he was grown enough to make his own choices. He made a stupid one at that and now look what happened. RIP.
  • still sad · 1 year ago
You raise a good point WOW it does cost a lot more in taxes to care for those who are locked up than to pay a trial lawyer. However one mistake in your comment is that they let him drive home. He got a ride home and decided to take his own car out and go back to the party. After this was when everything happened. RIP RYAN, WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU
  • WOWlol · 1 year ago
Oh I didn't know that. So, that right there changes my thoughts completely if they drove him home and he decided to go back to the party on his own. How about HIS parents? Where were they when he got home? Why did they let him leave?

very true this individual drank on his own. Decided to leave once he returned home, he left his own home. Its unfortunate what happened to this young man. Yes the people are wrong about supplying alcohol as well as a place to drink. But this individual left, and the left his own home again. Where were his parents when he showed up home drunk and then left drunk?
  • OUTSPOKEN_CITIZEN · 1 year ago
Dont get me wrong this situation is very tough. I do believe these people are in the wrong. But once that student returns home. He is now his parents responsibility. Im very sorry for there loss this is a very unfortunate incident. Not all blame can be put on the suppliers. Most of course

It's not about race, it's about an adult buying alcohol for minors, one of whom lost their life, then lying to cover it up. Now they've got to pay for their crime.

Also, please notice the comments are overwhelmingly against Brito and Mendez--looks like the jury has already spoken.

  • chimpy · 1 year ago
I think some are being too harsh...on the kid. I agree he is basically an adult now, but he's a teenager, drinking, put yourselves in his position, all but a very few 17-18 year olds wouldn't want to have a drinking party. Take the mother out of the picture for a second, just think of kids having a party, could have been any home, in the woods, wherever they could find a safe spot to have some beer, this is typical. I did not drink when I was a teen, for personal reasons, but I hung around with many kids that did and I never judged them then or now in a negative way for that, I judge society for that. Now put the mother back in, She should be held accountable completely, she is an adult and a parent. You sign onto a huge responsibility to become a parent, that includes doing what is right for your kids, keeping them from harm and teaching them to be responsible. She should pay for this- whatever is the just punishment. But the boy- a teenager, drinking, obviously illegal as we all know, and then lying, I realize, but the mother told him to lie and he was in a pretty tough spot- your mom tells you to lie and you have to either do it or rat out your mother? It's not right to lie, but I blame the mother. The kid needs to learn a lesson and be punished, but what would jail really do for this kid? make hoim work or speak to younger kids or something productive. The mother is a whole different story.
  • kyle · 1 year ago
I agree that the kid should not be held accountable.. The story doesnt state whether when the kid who tragically crashed originally got a ride home, if the driver was drinking; however if he was not then to me this kid did nothing wrong... Not taking into consideration lying to authorities.
  • mom · 1 year ago
And if the boy is not held accountable, what message does that send? That is okay not to follow the law, that it is okay to lie to police, that the life of a young man is really not worth much? I think mom and son need to take responsibility for their actions. Lord nows, the young man who died paid with horrible consequences his family must live with.
What disturbs me most is the message the accused boy sent to a friend boasting they would beat the rap. That shows such little remorse and I can't imagine how the dead boy's mom felt when she read that.
We all do make mistakes, the goal is to learn from them. Have these two learned anything?
Three cheers for the judge and folks, why not drop the racist stuff? A kid is dead and a whole bunch of people, from the students at CCHS to the Bourque family to the accused are all in pain.
  • kyle · 1 year ago
The mom supplied the alc. and the kids drank it... Where does the son do something wrong..he invited friends over and let them leave as far as we know with a DD.The mom deserves punishment for being just straight out stupid. The son didnt do anything

I personally think that kids today need better guidance. this woman is not the only mother who has let her underage child have parties and drink in her house. I've seen it more and more lately and it's really sad that adults have no problem watching their children abuse alcohol and get drunk. English, Spanish, Chinese, whatever language you speak, it shouldn't matter, you're still a parent, I honestly hope that this trial shows some of those parents out there, who allow this sort of thing to go on in their house, that it is wrong and you can really get in trouble for it. I feel horrible about Ryan Bourque, he certainly didn't deserve this to happen to him, he certainly shouldn't have left his home. But even with all that, kids are always going to find a way to drink, but parents should do what they can to prevent them from doing so.
  • OUTSPOKEN_CITIZEN · 1 year ago
There is no preventing children will find a way to drink, its the educating of what drinking causes on all differant l;evels. Educating children on what drinking can do and what alcohol is capable of can help to prevent these issues. Most people do not know that alcoholism is a decease and is hereditary. Education is the only for of prevention

BS.....if there was a father there doing what a father should do then this wouldn't have happened.
I too partied underage back in the day.
One thing for certain....I knew if I screwed up that dad was gonna put the smackdown on me....I was never scared of my mother.
SO if there was a dad in the picture and he let his kids know that there would be serious consequences for poor decisions he at least would have thought twice.
Imagine how many marriages there would be if the government suddenly cam out and said there will me new incentives for 2 parent homes in the form of $$$$$$ ???
WE'd have to start building new churches.
  • 66 · 1 year ago
I agree that the mother was not doing her job. She shouldnt ever let underage people drink in her house......It seems to me that parents want to be their kids friends instead of the authority figure that they should be. I always joke with my kids when I have to tell them NO about something....."if they like me all the time, then I'm not doing my job"
  • kyle · 1 year ago
Sure there would be more marriages but that does not mean that they would be quality marriages. I think i can speak for everyone when i say that no one wants to be with a someone who is not loya just for a little money.

Her son and Bourque were friends and seniors at Central Catholic High School in Lawrence. Bourque attended the drinking party at Brito's home on the night before his death. He got a ride home around 11 p.m. but left his home again two hours later.
Enough said! Why didn't Bourques parents see him drunk! He got into a car one his own, no one made him, he did it. Punish the mom for allowing the drinking to go on in her home, Punish the kid for charging the $5.00 per beer! Who cares if she doesn't speak English, beer and money are a universal language!!

    Hhmm......
  • Long Time Methuenite · 1 year ago
Good point Kyle but the bottom line here is about men being responsible for the children they bring into the world ,setting examples, and creating and enforcing certain rules to shape the future generation.
Right now that doesn't exist and I don't see it ever getting better.
I think there should be a new law where the parent/parents do the time for any crime commited by their kids PERIOD.
This includes the father who never married the mother and doesn't live there or doesn't even participate in their childs life.
That ought to take care of the 'having kids for money trend' as well.
You brought them into the world you better make them conform to society's rules or else you'll be punished.
Doesn't sound that unreasonable does it?
    That would clean things up!
  • OUTSPOKEN_CITIZEN · 1 year ago
I agree for the most part. The child should also be held accountable. I agree 100% with just me, make these people accountable for the issue not the death. If this info is correct the child got a ride home, then left his home. Hold these people resonsible for what they did, not what they could not control. As for speaking english, im a firm believer in adapting to the place you live in, the envirement should not have to adapt to you. And guess what thats life. This country was bulit upon values of equality. Everyone has the same opportunities. Life here is what you make of it. If you come here and expect things to be handed to you as many of these people, not just hispanics, immigrants as a whole, than you deserve the stereo type. You earn it by not helping yourself, and thinking that someone owes you something.
  • hokies · 1 year ago
I blame the mother.Enough with the racist comments about her not speaking english. She set a bad example to the kids and to her son. They both should be held responsible for their actions. Maybe they should bring the 30-pack of beer to an AA meeting and show them the impact of drinking beer and not to scrutinize poor Ryan. We are all still hurting because of his loss. for once let's have someone take responsiblity of hosting an underage drinking party, owning up to the consequences of this tragic event and have the Mendez family take the cover charge 0f$5.00 per student and put it towards good use like gas.
  • Don't worry about it.. · 1 year ago
As an American citizen regardless of whether or not she speaks English there are Spanish translations so am I supposed to believe that she was oblivious to the fact that buying for minors is illegal? I'm sorry.. I don't buy it. No way. The mother is to blame completely because she was the one that supplied the alcohol. And to the person above so you condone having underage drinking parties knowing full well that there's laws against it? You can't really control your kids to the point of confining them to the 4 walls of your house but you can explain the dangers of drinking...the lovely hangovers, possible unplanned pregnancies, driving under the influence... need I go on? Parents need to be responsible.

what some of you people don't seem to understand is that this mother and son are not being charged in the death of this student but rather for their illegal activity which came to light as a result of this tragic accident. - who knows how long they had been running parties like this or how much longer they may have gotten away with it. Poor decisions were made by everyone involved and one young man paid the ultimate price.
What he did after he left the party is not the issue but rather the fact that the party ever took place - and this is all they are being charged with - there obviously were many other students there as well and many more potential accidents. It is time this young man was allowed to rest in peace and let his family grieve privately - no one should judge anyone until they have walked in their shoes.
  • OUTSPOKEN_CITIZEN · 1 year ago
WELL SAID. I STAND BY MY WORDS AND SAY THAT THE ONLY PREVENTION METHOD THERE IS IS EDUCATION. MOTHER AND SON WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS, SUPPLYINGALCOHOL TO MINORS ON THE MOTHERS SIDE AND SUPPLYING A PLACE TO CONSUME THE ALCOHOL WHICH IS ON THE SONS HANDS. THOSE WERE THE ACTIONS THAT WERE UNDER THIER CONTROL, AND THATS WHAT THEY SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR AND IM CONFIDENT THAT THEY WILL.

Leave it up to the ignorance of others to claim that if there were a father in the picture this boy and mother would have had better judgment. You must be kidding me.
Choices were made that night by both adults and children, now there is consequences.

For all we know the young man that past ahs a father in his home, did that change his actions?

The only thing that comes to mind is that as a father this validates that I must keep a closer eye on my children and not go by the trusting words of there friends parents when they say they will look over them as they do there own.

I see two wrong here and yet the end result is still tragic.
No drinking should have been going on end of story. As minors we all know they have poor judgment at times when tested so the MOTHER should have known better.
The poor boy who lost his life had poor judgment as did the boy who lived there and the other drinking. There punishment is the haunting of this event and what the courts impose.

She needs to be punished, I agree. As for the sentence I can’t say what it should be. She should have known better and needed to keep the safety of these children the first priority from the second they walked in the door that night.

What bother me is the racial comments on here. OF you idiots who want to continue this poison you should be ashamed of your selves. I could say more than that but I would be investing to much energy on you that you’re not worth.

What brings me solace is knowing that one day you will be dead and that is one less ass hole smelling up the place.

By the way, I am Latino and we all did not come on a boat some of us were born here and some took a plane.

I dont know why, You all are so hatefull towards any other race other than blond hair and blue eyes you are all imigrants too this land belongs to the native americans. The thing is that when we die we all smell the same way.

I don't have blond hair or blue eyes. Guess you just lump me into that Aryan Nation group because I can't stand people who can't just become AMERICANS like the rest of us. I am only 3rd generation - none of my grandparents were born in this country. They came here to make a better life for themselves and their families. Work like hell to make sure their children (my parents) had a better life than they did.

    They had pride in themselves.
    Had pride in their neighborhoods
    Respected themselves and their neighbors
FORCED their kids to speak english and not their native tongue so that they could be AMERICANS.

So, while I love my heritage and we still have unique cultures, I NEVER look at myself as anything but AMERICAN.

You on the other hand, came here like a plague of locust. Err...take that back, locust work pretty hard to wipe out a field. More like large leeches. Just keeping sucking up blood off the host. Only thing you leave behind is your excrement and a bloody wound wherever you've been.

So, have fun speaking Spanish and raising whatever flag you want to raise. Very soon, you'll be the only ones left here. Know what happens to leeches when there are no hosts left? Doubt you do...but you'll find out.

Oh...and you won't be alone here, your liberal friends like Teddy Kennedy and Deval P and John Kerry will be here to help you. N-O-T.

The country belongs to whomever controls it.

First the buffalo, then the "natives", then the Europeans.
