The Eagle-Tribune: Methuen man killed in car crash in Salem, N.H.

  • sue · 1 year ago
What was an 87 year old man driving around at midnight?
  • DMA · 1 year ago
Whats a ignorant woman named "sue" making stupid comments on this website?
  • Sgt · 1 year ago
    What is an education?
  • huh. · 1 year ago
Something you need, you ignorant fool. Get a life and work for a living like this poor man did. Morons like you give humans a bad name. I hope a copa like you never shows up for any emergency I have.
  • sue · 1 year ago
Please explain how that comment is "ignorant".
  • Buford Pusser · 1 year ago
You are ignorant of the fact that and 87 year old man doesn't have a curfew.
  • Sue · 1 year ago
Buford - stop jumping to conclusions. I never said that. You're an "ignorant person". Perhaps you should look into proper grammar.
  • DMA · 1 year ago
It's ignorant because it was the first thing on your mind...A man is dead here and all you can do is question his right to be driving at a certain hour. You have no class.
  • sue · 1 year ago
So had I started with: "Oh this is such a tragedy. I am deeply saddened. I wonder why this more little man was driving at such a late hour? I am so sorry for his family."

    Would that have been better?
  • sue · 1 year ago
Oops I do believ that Buford's grammar has rubbed off on me. My apologies. I meant:

So had I started with: "Oh this is such a tragedy. I am deeply saddened. I wonder why this POOR little old man was driving at such a late hour? I am so sorry for his family."

    Would that have been better?
  • DMA · 1 year ago
    No that wouldn't have helped...
  • Commentard · 1 year ago
Wow, for once I agree with you. Sue, dear, its not what you say, its how you say it.

And yes, how I said THAT was in a condescending manner.
  • HAVERHILL TEEN · 1 year ago
I wondered the same thing. Such a shame, he was probably a great guy.
  • AlwaysTheIndependent · 1 year ago
Before you criticize other people's grammar, re-read your original question. Were you asking "why" he was driving or did you actually want to know "what" he was driving around?
  • Buford Pusser · 1 year ago
Sue should have her tubes tied and spare the gene pool her chromosomes.
  • vigilante · 1 year ago
Buford, that one had me laughing out loud.
    Thanks
  • Mr. Foot from Methuen · 1 year ago
That is pretty ignorant Sue. I need not say anymore.
  • Shygirl · 1 year ago
hahaha - this is funny coming from you, Mr Foot.

    sue asked:
What was an 87 year old man driving around at midnight?

et doesn't say what he was driving around sue but the fellow being 87 years old i'd bet it was a buick he was driving around.....

    sue asks:
What was an 87 year old man driving around at midnight?

according to the story he was driving around salem nh, maybe he was trying to drive around the tree. we'll never know

    .
  • Devious Portugee · 1 year ago
I feel very bad for the man, but I agree with Sue. That was my first thought. Where could he possibly be going around midnight? Its very sad
  • SmileySue · 1 year ago
old people should not be driving at that time it is dangerous
  • Chrissy · 1 year ago
It's no more dangerous than driving during the day. Any health related issue could've come up when he was driving. Maybe he had a massive heart attack or stroke? It happens.. I hear about these things all the time on the scanner. Just let the man rest in peace and don't question why he was out so late because no one but him knows why he was out.
  • bob · 1 year ago
The last time I checked there was no curfew for the seniors!!
  • nelson · 1 year ago
yea no curfew.but if that was my dad or grandad i would care enuff that he wouldn't be out their at night..right sue
  • EO · 1 year ago
I'm with Sue, what is an 87 year old man doing driving at midnight?I t's so sad that he lost his life and thank God that he didn't hurt anyone else!
  • DMA · 1 year ago
Maybe he didn't feel good and was trying to get himself to the hospital...Maybe he was hungry and wanted some Ben and Jerrys. The problem here is that he probably lived alone and there wasn't anyone to look after him...just another shut-in. American's DO NOT care for their elderly. In most other countries adult children and grandchildren care for thier elderly family...they would never live alone or even have the chance to go out and drive a car if not safe to do so.
  • Buford Pusser · 1 year ago
    Psycho conclusion-jumper.

Maybe he was out gettin sum. Maybe he had a heart attack.

Maybe YOU don't care for YOUR elderly.
  • kat333 · 1 year ago
There are many reasons why anyone, regardless of age, would be out this late. DMA was giving some options.

I work in the medical field and DMA is correct - many people don't care about the elderly. Many of them are living alone with no visitors (family or friends). And there are some that are living alone but not able to successfully do so because they're frail or sick and they're too stubborn to let someone help, or, no one cares enough to see how they're doing and see that they need some help.

Also, talk to nursing home patients and see how many friends and family visit.
  • DMA · 1 year ago
    Maybe you need a life.
  • DMA · 1 year ago
Not you kat33 I was talking to Buford
  • usa · 1 year ago
It seems that you are not an American!! My mother in law is 82 an living in an assisted living home where I pay for her care, 24hr care if needed. Food, etc so unless you know what you are taking about, go back to the country you came from!!!
  • Ann · 1 year ago
I am an American & I most certainly care for our elderly. Not just my own family but also those I don't know. Not all Americans are like that.
  • usa · 1 year ago
Im glad to see you do also, the reply was directed to DMA
  • DMA · 1 year ago
Ann - I am sure you do. But please don't close your eyes to a real issue. It's a fact that more and more elders are on their own! Yes, maybe son's and daughter's pay the bills, go for a once a week visit etc..That's not enough! The government also -and mostly - is to blame. They are having to chose to eat or buy their meds. A lot of elderly people don't have family to help at all. If you don't believe that than all your heads are buried in the sand and most likely you will be voting for old man McCain and his psycho sidekick.
  • JL · 1 year ago
Really, DMA: Please find something else to do with your free time. How an elderly man's untimely accidental death turns into an indictment and lecture about how "Americans" treat the elderly is beyond me. Your insipid ranting is completely irrelevant.
  • DMA · 1 year ago
I have a right to my opinion... and I can write about whatever I want! If you don't like it than I suggest you move on to another subject!

Please consider yourself corrected in learning this extremely proud and distingushed genltleman was well cared for by close, loving family and friends.
We wish to honor his memory as a true "American Hero". His passion as an advocate in support of Veteren's Affairs made a difference in the lives of deserving yet unserved veterans spanning three generations, WWII, Vietnam, including our current struggle today in the Middle East. His contribution as an American, acknowledging unselfish sacrifice to country commands the respect he deserves.
His family would appreciate you refrain from insensitive future comments that you posess no first hand knowledge . Respectfully.

For God's sakes, A) he has family who is very sad about their loss but probably can smile knowing he was independent up to his last day. B) He was probably leaving his girlfriends house!
  • SmileySue · 1 year ago
Thepoint here is people that old should not have licenses he could of killed someone besides himself!
  • Buford Pusser · 1 year ago
No one should have a drivers license, because anyone at any age can have a surprise stroke or heart attack while driving.
  • Family of Lost War Hero · 1 year ago
I must agree! Let's all surrender our rights before it's too late!
  • kat333 · 1 year ago
This could apply to any age. Teens have a higher accident rate than elderly up to age 80. Should teens not be allowed to get their licenses?

Bad things can happen to anyone at any time. This poor guy could have had a stroke, heart attack or a deer run out in front of his car.
  • Hometowngirl · 1 year ago
Sue, YOU ARE GOING TO BE OLD SOME DAY- DO YOU HAVE A HEART????? THIS POOR MAN DIED AND YOU ARE WONDERING WHY HE WAS OUT? NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS IS IT NOW?

  • Chris · 1 year ago
Not sure I agree with the idea that driving at night is more dangerous than daytime. There is no glare from the sun, and there are far fewer people on the road. For all we know the man lived with his wife, and was on his way to Walmart to get her some medicine or pickles and ice-cream for what ever it matters. No only did he have a right to be on the road, he may have had the best reason in the world to be there. Have a little respect for people, regardless of their age.
  • Gigs1973 · 1 year ago
Sad to hear about Joe, but...

It's just another reason why I think all drivers over 65 should take a mandatory driving test every two years until they are 79. At 80 and beyond, a test should be given every year.
  • me · 1 year ago
If you are going to test anyone over 65, then you should test everyone. Mothers who are focusted on their kids fighting in back seat, teens too busy talking to friends and not paying attention, people who thinks rules were made for everyone on road except themselves, 40 year old men that they are they are great. You can't just test some, test all ages or dont' test any ages.
  • Buford Pusser · 1 year ago
    Agreed.

This week I was at the bank drive-through and an elderly (85+) woman in the next line started to drive out, ran her rear tire up onto the curb... and immediately SLAMMED the gas down and tore ass out of there.

Clearly she thought she was slamming the brake.

If anyone had been in front of her, they'd be road pizza.

  • Anon · 1 year ago
It's a sad story. Regardless of age, people have the right to their freedoms. I do agree that after a certain age, a yearly test should be required to make sure there are safe drivers on the roads. But what troubles me even more is the lack of correct grammar and spelling in these comments. Please educate yourselves.

Perhaps he's an insomniac who still enjoys driving his car and elects to do so at night when there is little or no traffic. Who knows? But good grief, give the guy a break! It's probably one of the few joys he still experiences in life. And we don't know the circumstances of what happened at this time -- so lighten up. He was apparently an active senior --- God bless him.

DMA isn't entirely wrong when he comments that America doesn't properly care for its elderly. Though obviously many people do care for the elderly in their family, generally our culture does not appear to revere the elderly as many other cultures do..they give them deep respect, listen to their words of wisdom, and care for them.....our culture could learn a valuable lesson from other cultures concerning the treatment of our elderly if we only cared enough to....
  • DMA · 1 year ago

I agree with Sue. DMA what is the matter with you? Do you now have a heart? I recall the last time man was killed and you had no sympathy towards their family! Why? I'll tell you why; because they were Hispanic!! Let's all give DMA a hug God knows she showing some type of sympathy!!
  • DMA · 1 year ago
Wait...What? I am not Prejudice! Are you kidding me....That was over 2 months ago and it was an italian man that died in an accident and my point was that everyone was SO sad and leaving such loving comments - which was deserved. I stated - on that post - IF he was HISPANIC people WOULDNT be saying nice things..they would be saying he deserved it and he was probably on drugs. So "Something not right" Get your facts straight...cuz there's somethin not right aboutchu!

The bottom line is that if your out late at nite, there is a good chance that someone in another car, has been drinking, is sleepy, is old and can't see too well at nite ...There are numerous reasons why accidents happen. Age might have something to do with it, but not always. I don't undersand why so many inconsiderate people comment on these tragic events and the tribune allows it to continue. I believe in the freedom of the press and the first ammendment but this trash is ridiculous.

Another reason that licenses should be removed from the elderly that are incapable of operating a motor vehicle. He could have killed someone else.. or a group of children. Siblings have a responsibility to ensure their parents are competent to drive.

This man died in an accident. What is wrong with you people? Bickering about why he was out late at night, proper grammer ect...This man is a WWll veteran who died alone in his car. He fought for his country with pride and I'm sure fear for what he believed was for the good of all of mankind. Do you not have anything better to do than critisize him because of his age and the time? You should hang you heads and ask for his forgiveness for the lack of respect you are showing him and his family. Shame on all of you!!

  • young at 68 · 1 year ago
I am 68 years young have had my license from the age of 16 never
have had a ticket, never got stoped or had a accident .So for all of
you who think the elderly should have road testing sit on it. I see
more 20 to 40 year old persons talking on cell phones, loud music
cutting in and out of traffic. If i had to take a road test i would. My
heart goes out to the family of the man. Maybe he had a reason to
    be out.
  • Paul · 1 year ago
    Dear young at 68,
The argument goes both ways. I am appalled at the lack of real knowledge on this board. Statistically speaking the odds of 16 - 25 year old men and woman getting into accidents is HIGH. It tapers off after that but then spikes up drastically at 69 and above. In fact the data is almost identical. The amount of people who cause accidents increases at 75 and spikes up to match the 18yo crowd. Now think about the data logically. 18+ cause accidents because of cell phones, blah blah blah. but most of all because of inexperience. The elderly cause accidents not because of the lack of experience or cell phones or blah blah blah. But because of degenerative response times, sight and hearing. I believe all people over the age of 69 should be required to take a physical driving exam yearly. Not because of some hatred towards elderly but for safety. If an 16yo has to take a test to obtain a license it is ignorant to think they can have it forever regardless of age, regardless of that persons ability to drive. And to anyone who disagrees, I dare you to contact the family's of the 86yo who killed 10 people in santa monica by driving thru an open market. This is not an issue of age or discrimination. The FACT is that your ability to operate a motor vehicle falters as your physical issues impede that ability. If you want to let anyone who is physically impaired drive then remove the drunk driving laws. Who needs them? Its my right as a human to drive impaired and no one should take that away from me... Doesn't make much sense does it? Neither does allowing ANYONE who is mentally or physically impaired drive a vehicle. Now with that all said, We may never know what happened to this poor soul, But we shouldn't assume its because of age. We simply wont ever know so stop assuming. My heart felt condolences to the family.

    same way? Like i said
before if they do give 69 or older test

    To Mr. Methuen.
25 MINUTES!!! Where did YOU come up with such a BS story...if you even read the article then you would know the fire chief was right behind this driver and the second the accident happened he, and many other devoted emergency workers were right there trying to save his life. This blog is nothing less than a joke, and I pity every one of you who had nothing better to do than to speculate on whether this poor man should or should not have been driving. It was an ACCIDENT. ACCIDENTS happen every day. I agree with Paul here, and the other FEW had anything to really offer...my sincere condolonces to his family....some people just have NO RESPECT!
  • Paul · 1 year ago
Young at 68, You keep dragging age into this. It is not about AGE, I thought I had made that clear but apparently not. This is all about your ability to drive a motor vehicle. If you show up for your exam and you get the sign off then bravo! have at it. And yes I will feel that exact same way today tomorrow and god willing 30 years from now but this is not the area for this debate. This poor mans family has seen enough. If your interested in continuing please email me.
  • Harry · 1 year ago
I felt really bad when I read this. After all the air was cleared though I feel that the elderly should have to pass a reflex type of test because they (we all do) owe it to our fellow drivers...to keep them safe too. Last year, we had a similar circumstance here in NH. The difference was that the elderly fellow took a young woman's life, along with his. No need to get upset with the comments that are directed towards the idea that the elderly maybe shouldn't be driving at certain times or beyond so many years. This isn't a condolence area but rather a comments area. Maybe someday, reality will sink in...
