Lawrence.. what a dump. It's even hard to tell the difference between the cops and the criminals. Rapes, brutal assults, fraud.. and those are done by the police.. the rest of this dump speaks for itself.

I thought they had police inside the nite clubs Years ago
police were stationed inside clubs. This man had 5 children
why was he out and not home with his wife and children ?
Now these children have no Father. This club needs to be
shut down. Then again someone else will buy it and change
    the name of it again.

I say the city of lawrence is stripped of all liquor licenses and sales,, i am well aware this may not come even close to solving problems but, if there is no communal place for groups of differant types of people to meeta nd drink together than the issues could possibly be reduced. Hey its a start, id rather level the place and start fresh like nthgin was ever there but since thats not an option we have to start somewhere. Like using the national guard as the lawrence police force.
  • wing wang wong · 1 year ago
why would he be home with the children? WE are paying for the little cretins.

How ignorant of you to make the comment "why would he be home with the children? We are paying for hte little cretins. He had a job and the mother also has a job.... Please do not comment on what you do not know? FYI... Keep your ignorant comments to yourself... or to those just like yourself..
  • kat333 · 1 year ago
I remember those days too. With budget cuts, they can't afford to put an officer in each night club.

The fight did not happen inside the club but it could be the clientele that this club attracts that causes the problem. I highly doubt changing it to an upscale club would work out; the place would go out of business because people would be afraid to go to that section of town.

    SAVAGES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • lawrencevoice · 1 year ago
Pena is totally right they can't control what people do when they get out of a business. Right next the former Punto night club there are a number of other bars and restaurants. I have seen fights start over someone just crossing the street by others who are driving by and exchange words and these people don't even know each other and weren't in the same club or bar. It is easy to point fingers.

As far as I know there has been a rift between thugs from Haverhill, Lowell and Lawrence for years. This could have been from a previouse altercation. You know exactly who is not from your area so it is easy to pick a fight.

Lets face it there are trouble makers all over the place, look at what happened in Lowell about a week ago that guy that was killed at the local sub shop. People are going to have to watch out where they go.

The shooting in Lowell is in todays Lowell Sun. www.lowellsun.com.
The shooter is a barber from Santo Domingo, and yes he lives in Lawrence.
The other cities mentioned have proactive Police Chiefs and Mayors who have implemented walking beat patrols.
  • lawrencevoice · 1 year ago
I read the lowellsun and there is nothing on there that says that the shooter was from Dr or that he is from Lawrence. It says that the incident is still under investigation. Says that it was because of an argument.

Now you tell me what the heck does an owner of a bar, restaurant or club have to do with people just arguing and when they go outside they start shooting each other.

It is these animals who can't control themselves c'mon over an argument I have to go ahead and shoot somebody.

Listen who ever is a hot head is going to start trouble no matter where they go. This doesn't have to do with that club or this bar or that one.
  • sonny3 · 1 year ago
The Sun had the story on the 13th,Julio Rodriguez from Lawrence was the shooter.
  • lawt-town fred · 1 year ago
Part of the problem is that politicians (lantigua) have a hand in these clubs. They protect their investments all to well. Just look at who is the comissioner of the licensing board, does the name Fielding ring a bell.? These people, along with the corrupt police in Lawrence are the real thugs, and part of the problem not the sollution.

NHresident YOU ARE AN IDIOT!!!!! He could've been a hard working soul who happen to go out with a few friends for a drink. You know what is your problem NHresident? You see this young man who happens to be Latino you are quickly rationalizing. Shame on all of you "who are quick to judge based on his race!! What ever happen to sympathy of a human being? I'm SHAMED for all of you especially coming from ONE of my OWN KIND!
  • Commentard · 1 year ago
This is a LOT less about his race and a LOT more about where he was at the time this happened.

Once again, though, we tend to learn that those involved in situations like this are generally not the fine, upstanding citizens people initially try to make them out to be.
Rest assured that the first person who says something like "You don't know him! He just made a few mistakes in his life!" will confirm that.

I'm reserving judgement until we learn more about what went on here and the people involved.

Get rid of all these gross establishments in our city...we don't need them...and they are ruining our city...what type of people go to these places...our city has enough problems shut these places down and build reputable businesses that are not open all hours into the night....another senseless murder...for what, did he look at someone the WRONG way...people get a life!
  • no name · 1 year ago
this places are open for all types of people just a place for people to distract theire minds. there are clubs for all races all over lawrence am from newburyport and once in awhile will go down to lawrence to forget about the stress and ignorant people like you. and all who pass judgement. shootings death can happen any where any place you people only get the lawrence newspapaers try reading others and youll see that crime is everywhere not just lawrence get a life.
  • lawrencevoice · 1 year ago
Police disagreed, though. The club is responsible for its patrons when they leave and "there are dozens of restaurants and bars in the city that close quickly and quietly without any problems,"

i have to disagree with this argument from the police department. Does this mean that if I own a club and I have some people go there and leave and at 4 am someone happens to be killed I should be responsible. If the club let these people out at lets say 1 am and they go around hanging out after ours then it is their fault.

People love to hang out after these clubs let out, and they find themselves getting into trouble. Why don't they just go home after, but not they stick around the area.
  • lawrencevoice · 1 year ago
I have a solution make a database of trouble makers like they do in Las vegas and ban them from being anywhere near these establishments. Have video survailance in every night club and as soon as there is someone that is recognized on the database call the police and have them removed from the premises.

This has worked in other cities. Trust me no one just becomes a trouble maker over night these are the same offenders who are constantly causing these types of problems.

There are people out there who are more than willing to start problems and fights. They go from club to club looking for problems.

Post their pictures online or something, and I will bet that this sort of thing will stop because people will know who they are.

What the hell does Mike Fielding have to do with this? I'm no fan of his but you're way out of line uni. Slander and libel are words that come to mind. I hope the Trib gives him your IP address and he comes looking for you.
  • Ridiculous · 1 year ago
Well, "watching" is Gay too and He also happens to be a racist that uses the annonymous benefits of the internet to bash and criticize anyone who is not caucasian. This moron stated in the First Report of this Story that the Hispanic Community in Lawrence had him contemplating Joining the KKK, all of his posts in some form degrade any other race thats not his. Just because a small percentage of people in a certain group act stupid, doesnt neccessarily means that the whole group its that way.

By the way unlike Mike Fielding, You wont have to contact the Trib for my IP Address I can give it to you, remember that other racist comment you made in the other story, Come and say it to my face and well see if you get home with your dentures intact.

  • Dave1 · 1 year ago
i HAVE SEEN TROUBLE MAKERS HANGING OUTSIDE OF NIGHT SPOTS JUST WAITING FOR PEOPLE TO GET OUT SO THAT THEY COULD START PROBLEMS. i HAVE SEEN THIS IN HAVERHILL, LOWELL, LAWRENCE, BOSTON. YOU NAME IT THEY ARE OUT THERE.

DON'T GO HANGIGN IN AN AREA THAT YOU DON'T KNOW. MOST OF THESE FIGHTS HAPPEN RIGHT AFTER THE CLUBS LET OUT SO WHY NOT LEAVE BEFORE THEY CLOSE AND AVOID THESE PROBLEMS.

GIVE YOUR SELF ATLEAST 15 TO 20 MINUTES BEFORE CLOSING, WILL GIVE YOU ENOUGHT TIME TO GET TO YOUR CAR AND LEAVE. DON'T HANG OUT IN THE FRONT OF THE CLUB AFTER IT HAS FINISHED, THIS IS WHEN MOST FIGHTS START.
  • chimpy · 1 year ago
Sounds reasonable, too bad many just have to be a tough guy and look for a fight. They're willing to risk a deadly confrontation because 1) they believe they're too tough to be on the wrong end and 2) they think respect is earned in the trenches. Anyone still there at closing is there on purpose, hoping to see or be involved with some action. You get no street cred leaving 15 minutes before the action, and nothing is more important than street cred, not life, family or any decency. I believe 100% that these guys could have just happened to end up at this place unknowing what they were getting involved with. As for 90% of those there at closing, the same is not true.
  • amous4evr · 1 year ago
My question is this, why do the Latinos hate each other so much?
They have to be better than the Arabs. The same could be said for the Blacks. They kill their own kind and blame the whites for it. I don't get it.
  • chimpy · 1 year ago
Think about your comment for a minute, then decide if it is astoundingly stupid or if you still feel the same. If you realize you spouted off while not thinking, give yourself a break, people say things in error. If you still see nothing wrong with your comment, seek additional help.

We all know X on X hate happens, whether it is as you listed Latino, Arab, Black or whatever, but really there are many reasons, some include regional/cultural differences, religous differences, economics and territorial. Perhaps, in this case, it is when you have a vast majority of one larger group, seperated by multiple regional and ethnic divisions, squeezed into one social and economic category, competing for the same scarce resources and to be the top of a percieved very low rung, divisions become deep and violence enters the solution when no other solution presents itself or is made popular with those willing to exert their influence.

Maybe by saying "they have to be better than the Arabs" you think fighting over religion is worse than what the Latinos appear to be fighting over. I guess I would agree. White on white violence seams pretty varied, we kill each other for many reasons, not sure where that puts us on the scale. Is there such a thing as white on white violence or is it just random violence?
  • watching · 1 year ago
Or maybe they're just friggin' criminals?
  • chimpy · 1 year ago
    true.
  • amous4evr · 1 year ago
Maybe I'm off a bit on some of my comment but I'm just tired of repititious "incidents" that seem to be happening in the same places involving the same class of people. I have nothing against the different cultures. I just shudder to think that the "fatal" error in judgement that these men made was to be in the wrong place at the wrong time where people don't need much of an excuse to take a life. I don't think I'm wrong about the different ethnic groups having a lack of value for the lives of their own kind.
Some people of the middle east think nothing of strapping a bomb to an 8 year old child to kill people of their own ethnic group sitting in a restaurant. Some people in this country, of all cultures, are getting crazy ideas from these examples. I just hope it doesn't get worse with all the economy troubles ahead.

You are an idiot. What about how "whites/KKK/Skinheads" treated the Jews and every other american whio was not a blond hair/blue eyed WASP? Or Anglos to Irish-Americans, Italian Americans. I mean, seriously? You must not be the brightes buklb in the box to spew out a comment like that. Do your homework and you'll see that there is "white on white hate as well.
  • amous4evr · 1 year ago
I agree with you, there is white on white stuff too!. When this white on white stuff was going on really bad in the old days, they didn't have as many cultures in the 'hood so they separated themselves by different things. I meant are the whites killing the blacks in Dorchester? Are the Latinos killing the Jews in Lawrence? I grew up in Lawrence and never knew a bad black person while I lived there, I'm white.
Nothing personal, just an observation. We in the Greater Lawrence area are not in a sectarian conflict like what is going on in Iraq. Please tell me it's not true that all a Latino man from Haverhill has to do is go into a Latino bar in Lawrence and his chances of leaving there without trouble are about the same as
the Red Sox beating Tampa Bay. Remember, this is nothing personal.

Sure, it happens but what I'm saying is just because Lawrence os 80% Latino doesn't mean 80% of the time something bad happens in Lawrence it has to be between Latino people. Take care of your own.

Since I no longer live in Lawrence I probably shouldn't even give a hoot, but I feel bad about the way things seem to be and the people that are affected by it. It's not a judging kind of thing. I mean, let's face it. If there's a arson fire in a Latino home, who they gonna look for? Native-American gang members?
I'm sorry if I offend anyone.

"Distinction" indeed. Distinct in that this place's patrons are consistently a source of trouble? I think not. God forbid you point out who these people are or where they're from. That makes you a racist. Where are the community leaders (if they even exist) speaking out against the gun culture and violence that is killing their own people? Sad sad sad...

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO LOVE THY NEIGHBOR?? NOW THINGS KIDS HAVE TO GROW UP WITH NO DAD..A WIFE WITH NO PARTNER..WHERE IS THE LOVE THY NEIGHBOR IN THAT?

  • chimpy · 1 year ago
My question exactly. Why do these kids have to grow up without a dad? Why do so many kids have to? Why are the parents continuously getting killed in plain sight? Why do these killers walk around like sick punks with guns and feel it is OK to shoot you for disrespecting them? Why does the community these pukes live in expect outsiders to look on them positively when the cycle never ends?

I understand that an owner of a business must be held responsible on the alcohol consumption of those that enter into the club. On the other hand, it does not make any sense to me how the owner is responsible that someone got killed outside his business. That is like saying that murders or fights that happens anywhere in Lawrence after a patron leaves any business then it becomes the responsibility of the owner? The owners are responsible to some degree but how can an owner be blamed when this killing perhaps was more than likely to do a rivalry of some sort and unfortunately they were leaving a night club when they were injured. Blaming the owner is not the best solution, also no where in the article does it say they the two men that were attacked were drunk or had been drinking. So how can an owner be blamed for something that is more than likely not even related to him? Or better yet, the owner is not responsible for the type of lives people choose for themselve, the owners repsonsiblity comes down to watching out with the alcohol consumption and making sure everyone leaves orderly at the end of the night. Lawrence may not be the best place and of that I am sure a lot of people know, but at least this man is trying to change the scene on broadway the best he can. Bottom line Lawrence needs a change, but how can Lawrence change when all that people do is talk, talk and talk, but no one is willing to step up and bring about the change.
  • chimpy · 1 year ago
I agree with you on some points. This new owner has not had time to establish an environment that is less conducive to the violence that has happened at this spot for so many years. The particular spot turned into a hang-out where trouble occurred. This was in part due to the previous ownership's lack of accountability. A new atmosphere, new expectations and a new attitude can change this place into one that is just not "the place" for the violent crowd. Will the violence move somewhere else?- probably. But the new owner should be given the chance- and the city's backing- if he trully has a plan to end the violence. He can't control what happens down the road when people leave his place, but he can have control over the types of people he attracts to his club and what type of inflamatory actions are not going to be tolerated. Some of the violence would never escalate if the initial spark never occurs- say a T-shirt with a slogan or the duds that hang outside provoking reactions out of people.

most of the shady nightspots in the city are run by the police and u can do illegal betting which they allow in their OWN bars. anyone else would be in jail. the police station right around the corner from that bar and they cant moniter more closely.the "mayor" should be outraged but its the oldboy network and he doesnt live in that neighborhood so he doesnt care. police need to out and seen more other than at dunkin donuts.

i will admit the reason Haverhill doesn't have any shootings or stabbings outside of the bars at closing time is there's always police present. Used to live right above 4 bars and for 3 years, not one major incident.
  • lawrencevoice · 1 year ago
Listen I have seen many fights and once again I tell you that within any city there are trouble makers but when others from other cities come to somones home turf then the violence could turn on the visitors.

This could happen if lets say someone from Haverhill goes to a night spot in Lowell and is with a couple of friends then this person might get targeted.

People really have to watch were they are and about their surroundings.
  • lawrencevoice · 1 year ago
We can't go on blaming the police for everything that goes wrong, People have to use common sense, some people drink as if it was going out of style. They love to hang around everywhere and anywhere at all hours of the night.
  • OUTSPOKENCITIZEN · 1 year ago
Crime has become a tradition in Lawrence. Thats it, whether your black white hispanic it does not matter crime seems to have become a part of the cities culture. You could blame it on the closing of a mill city, or you can blame it on the police. As far as the recial issue comes as long as the City of Lawrence is Predominantly Hispanic than the Cities' crime will continue to be associated with hispanics. Its like that any where with all differant types of people..
  • Walter Winchell · 1 year ago
Senseless acts of violence solve absolutely nothing as we all know. Just like that poor woman who was beaten to death with a baseball bat saturday morning in Manchester. And for what ? What does it solve, nothing. What does it prove, Manhood ? Absolutely not. Like I've said in previous comments, the only way to bring these crimes down is to make punishments fit these crimes. Special rooms should be built in the prisons and labled as "Retaliation Chambers" for crime retaliations against the perps who commit them. For example, if someone wants to beat someone with a baseball bat, when he's caught an convicted, take him into a "Retaliation Chamber" and beat him with a bat. If someone wants to shoot somebody to death with a gun, same deal. Lets do the math here, if they could implement something like that, can you imagine how many tax dolars would be saved by achieving such a thing ? Not to mention the fact that these perps would be thinking twice about their actions. But unfortunately, consevative liberals are the reason why we'll never see it. I hope that they catch these guys who did this. That makes this homicide # 4 in the "Immigrant City" this year. Shooting someone over a senseless argument ? What does that buy you ? LOSS OF YOUR FREEDOM FOR LIFE !!!!!!!! Is it worth it ? NOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!

If you take a good look at the picture where the police are gathering infromation and notice where they are standing is the old Releifs inn club don't know if it is still open. This parking lot is shared by Melindas Restauran which is also a bar, the Former punto final and Releifs inn. This place is really dark and across the street from there is another emptly lot which is used by patrons which is behind the former Punto Final.

This area is not well lit, this place needs more street lights if they want to get crime down in that area.

The side streets don't help either because there are not many street lights there on either side.

This is crazy? What, you have never gone out for a night to see friends or just relax?? And for all the people making comments about race, and why wasn't he home with his kids?? How about you take a look at the bar at the 99, or Michael's Harborside or the claddaugh, how many white people with kids are out for the night??? People have a right to go ouot for the night. So if this man was at The Outback Steakhouse for dinner, and upon getting in his car to leave and was shot, would you condemn him for going out to eat because of his race? What about all the rich white people who always go out and pay no attention to their kids because they have nannies, but that is okay, right?

I knew this man and he did not deserve what happened. He was a family man who went out one night with family and close friends. Why was he out and not with his family? Because this is a free country where you should be able to go out to enjoy yourself without losing your life. Five kids don't have a father now and for what? Whatever it was, it sure wasn't worth his life.He was to good of a person. Not only is a great father gone but my Father lost his best friend. What's sad about this is that even if the low-lives that did this were caught Julio isn't coming back.R.I.P Julio You will be missed and never forgotten. We love you.

im only 17 years old and i have lived in lawrence all my life, i have had friends that have been killed because of the violence. i dont think it has anything to do with race because as many people have pointed out lawrence is mainly hispanic so obviously when people in lawrence fight and someone dies, the person that dies is going to be hispanic, but i think that people focus too much on the violence in lawrence and not on the good things that happen. Im proud to say that i was born and raised in lawrence and i wouldnt change that for the world. the people are so nice and welcoming no matter wat race u r. i have a cousin that goes to salem high in NH and she says that the kids over there make fun of her because she is hispanic and that they are always talking crap about lawrence and how bad it is but FYI dont talk crap about a city if you are not from there if you dont know what really goes on. people pay too much attention to wat the news paper says about lawrence and to be honest i dont think that the news paper will ever say anything positive about lawrence, for example when a group f lawrence kids won a math trivia against other schools in other cities why didnt the paper say that, they just like to focus on the bad stuff and honestly lawrence is not that bad and theres no reason why people should talk bad when they are not from here

Are you kidding me. Let me just say for a minute that I wouldn't even drive past this location, let alone go there as a destination. In the past there have been "Double shootings, triple stabbings and other violent crimes." But we're bringing a new life to the community with the opening of the D'Cache. Do you feel good about yourselves now??? It should have said we're bringing more DEATH to the community.
Here's a thought for all of you who might frequent a place like this. Save the gangster the trouble and just shoot yourself in the head two or three times.
I'll bet 99.99% of the people who continue to frequent this place are voting for Barak. Let me take that back. 2.5% of the people who frequent this place are registered voters. The rest have to take a plane to vote in their respective homeland.
Lets stop living like animals down there in Lawrence. It's time to put a fence around the entire city and charge admission. We'll call the place a zoo and the patrons are on Safari. We'll call it Chico Bongo's Safari.

WHEN THERE'S SO MUCH CRIME IN A CITY IT'S BECAUSE THE LAWS ARE NOT ENFORCED AND THEY GIVE AWAY CLUB PERMITS LIKE CANDY.
  • Andria · 1 year ago
I completely agree with you. Just another example this weekend there was a huge brawl on Park Street ( I was visiting a friend) Between the sloppy dirty "women" yielding bats, and the poor dude at the other end. You would think that the six cruisers that should up something would have been done. Oh no not here... After about an hour of what looked like friends chit chatting, everyone got in there cars and drove off...

What the hell happened to people being held accountable?

Oh and for the cops leaning on the hood of the car smoking with one of Lawrence finest hood rats, careful you might be on candid camera!!!!

    This is ridiculous.
All these people bashing Lawrence.. it's making me SICK!
I was born and raised in Lawrence and have done a lot of work for the city. Lawrence has so much potential and there is so much talent in the kids and people of the community. We have scholars, musicians, artists, etc. who have the potential to achieve the same amount of success as any typical blue-collar American. We have activists in the community that are helping these kids fulfill there dreams and are making Lawrence a better place for the future. Never mind trying to eradicate all social sites in the city and wasting your energy on bashing Lawrence. Instead, put energy into helping the community, and bring positive outlooks & support.
I am a 21 year old co-owner and creator of a music production company. I'm a singer, song-writer, composer, and producer who's songs are on local radio stations all day (JAM'N 94.5 being one of them)! Being a person who has overcome many obstacles, sometimes insurmountable, I am offended when people denounce Lawrence in such a way. Lawrence is what made me who I am today and will always be; a strong, ambitious GO-GETTER, who will stop at nothing to achieve what he sets his mind to! In all honestly, Lawrence is not as bad as it is perceived to be.

Don't judge a book by its cover, unless you have laid within its pages! ...its real!!

To C-Sharp and Hali, I also grew up in Lawrence. I never understood the prejudice that I heard whenever I was outside the city until I moved from the city. The truth is, there is a segemt within Lawrence that does not wish to be civilized. I know there are a lot of real good things taking place, like what goes on within the Boys and Girls Club. But have you ever tried getting there. Driving down Water St. is like avoiding land mines. Little kids dashing in and out of traffic; kids looking like they just robbed a bank simply step out into traffic without regard for whats barrelling down on them. You can't leave anything in your car. For that matter, you can't even leave your car. Honestly, I like the fact I can leave my house and not lock the doors because my neighbors are not going to rip me off. I'm not saying everybody in Lawrence are like that, but lets be honest, its a hotbed of problems. Until the people within the city limits wake up and decide their not going to take it any more; Unitl they decide they want their city back, this is the image Lawrence will always portray. So, lets say we stop blaming others and take some responsibility. You want change, make it happen. You want people to stop knocking your city, change. Show the surrounding towns that people in the city have compassion for life and perhaps then, people will want to visit your city. Until then, I'm out. Good luck to Lawrence.
By the way, before anybody says I don't have a right to complain about the city because I don't live there; keep in mind, a great deal of outside tax dollars go to support your city that would die tomorrow if they did not get thise tax dollars. That $120 million dollar high school was paid by outside money and hardly a dime came from your local city taxes.

    your welcome.

THE CITY OF LAWRENCE! a nice politicians slogan when it comes to getting the seat. In your dreams! Lawrence is Not a city, Lawrence is just a small Town with a bunch of industrial brick brown buildings and people living around those dark monuments of the past they never paint, for is a colorless town with nothing for people,(specially young and children), to do but clubs, what other amusement or nice places you find in the town that lets say a visitor could be impressed with?

Are you kidding #9. Lets start with all of the new schools and the many gymnasiums within. They have the State Pools, countless ball parks and fields. They have the best equipment to maintain these things, because after all, they are the poor city of Lawrence. They have the Boys and Girls club, the YMCA and the YWCA. Again, I gew up there. I have fond memories of my triple decker neighborhood and the zillions of kids I had to play with. We spent countless hours at the parks and pools. Nothing has changed. Just the people have changed. Methuen, Andover and No. Andover are no different, except for the people who live there. The people from the surrounding communities want their children to succeed and give them a chance. Its about time the people in Lawrence climb out of the cave and join the rest of the civilized world and for Gods sake, stop making excuses for them.

Only two ways to fix lawrence....both involve military involvement and have been proven in Iraq.

    1) troop surge

    2) Shock and Awe

    I say a lot of #2 and then a little #1.
