For you guys complaining that Lawrence is 90% Hispanic, so that's why this happens. NOT TRUE. Commenttard is right. Lawrence is about 60 (or so) % Hispanic. That is not a valid excuse. Methuen is like 90% White, yet 95% of the time a serious crime is commited in the City, it's a HISPANIC. So where is the logic there? 95% of shoplifters in Salem are Hispanic and Salem is like 98% white. So, if you have crime in 2 mainly white cities, committed by Hispanics, is that also because Lawrence is "90% Hispanic?"

I just said, the FACT remains that whenever a neighboorhood crumbles in the Valley, 95% of the time, it's b/c Hispanics moved in. I'm very well educated and know that their are Latinos, Hispanics and Spanish. But, the FACT remains that when Hispanics (or thier like) move into a Valley neighborhood, it most likely causes problems. Also, I love the fact when Hispanics cry out about people being prejudice against LATINOS and how LATINOS need help and that LATINOS are being ignored. Yet, they are Puerto Rican and Dominican. Where is the LATIN? The German Fest you type of was held in South Lawrence, CONFINED to the tents in the football field. The Lebanese also celebrate yearly and their festivities confined to the grounds they are held on. It's been several years since I've attended and yes there was singing, belly dancing, music CONFINED to the grounds they were held on. These celebrations were NOT continued day and night for a week with drunk drugged up drivers spray painting cars as they drive thru the city blasting ghetto music 24/7 for a week.I don't believe there is another festival except the Labor Day Bread and ROSES Heritage festival over at the common Labor day.Perhaps some "new" immigrants should attend that one. it's filled with the history of Lawrence and the people that came here for a better life,. WORKED hard and built UP the city.MEN. Women AND children worked 16-18 hour shifts to put bread on the families table.Maybe that will show some people what coming in as an immigrant was all about. I'm there every year, Can't wait to see you all lol. I LOVE the festivals in Lawrence..except when they are used as an excuse to assault the city with drunken drugged up leeches.

Lawrence man charged with filing phony stolen car report

LAWRENCE — Police never caught the driver of a 1999 Honda Civic who jumped out of the moving car and fled after a brief chase April 29.

But they caught the car's owner, Andy Guillon, in a lie after he reported the car stolen and filed a claim with his insurance company.

Guillon, 21, of 52 Crescent St., Lawrence, was charged with auto-insurance fraud and making a false statement to police alleging a motor vehicle theft. His arrest brings to 316 the number of people charged with auto-insurance fraud in the city's 41/2-year crackdown.

Just 17 minutes after the phantom driver eluded Officer Paul Rossi in a foot chase, Guillon called police to report his car stolen from a lot near his girlfriend's house on Garden Street — the same area where the same car was reported stolen nearly three years earlier. He claimed to have locked the keys in his car the night before.

Guillon's interview with Rossi raised questions about his claim of a stolen car. While seated in a police cruiser headed for the police station, Guillon asked the officer where his car was crashed. Rossi asked him why he would think somebody crashed it.

Jurors in the trial of a British man accused of killing his wife and 9-month-old daughter were shown the baby's undershirt and polka-dot pajamas caked with dried blood Monday — a sight that drew gasps in the courtroom.

State police chemist Deanna Dygan testified that she determined that the gunshot to the chest that killed Lillian Rose Entwistle was a "contact shot," with the gun pressed directly against the baby.

Neil Entwistle, 29, has pleaded not guilty to murder in the January 2006 killings of his daughter and his 27-year-old wife, Rachel.

When Dygan identified Lillian's bloody "onesie" undershirt and footed "sleeper" pajamas, Entwistle looked away and later dabbed his eyes with a tissue. His mother, Yvonne, sobbed as she sat in the front row of the courtroom and was comforted by Entwistle's father, Clifford.

A small hole was visible in the upper left chest area of the pajamas and the onesie. Jurors were also shown the bloodstained green nightshirt Rachel had been wearing.

Prosecutors allege that Entwistle shot his wife and daughter after becoming despondent over mounting debt and dissatisfied with his sex life. The suspect flew to his native England the day after the killings and was arrested in London three weeks later.

Entwistle told police he came home from running errands and found his wife and daughter fatally shot in their bed in the master bedroom of their rented house in Hopkinton, where they had moved 10 days earlier.

In his cross-examination of Dygan, defense lawyer Elliot Weinstein tried to undermine investigators' credibility by highlighting the fact that police initially did not realize that Rachel Entwistle had been shot in the head.

At first, police noticed a wound above her left breast, but an autopsy later revealed that she died of a gunshot wound to the head. The post-mortem examination showed that Lillian Entwistle died of a gunshot wound to the chest; investigators said that bullet passed into Rachel Entwistle's chest.

"You didn't notice that she had been shot in the middle of her forehead at first?" Weinstein asked.

"This was the careful and meticulous work, and yet nobody saw that that evening, did they?"

"That's correct," Dygan replied.

A Kingston man in prison for nearly choking his girlfriend to death lost his bid for a new trial, paving the way for federal prosecutors to try him on charges of stealing $1.6 million from his daughter's trust fund.

David Burns, 42, claimed his former lawyer didn't do enough at his 2004 attempted murder trial to seek out evidence or vet a juror who got a ride to court from a Kingston police officer.

But Superior Court Judge Tina Nadeau concluded June 9 that defense lawyer Richard Samdperil had pursued all avenues in defending Burns at trial. Nadeau also found several other claims made by Burns had no merit.

Burns is serving an 18-year to life sentence in state prison on the attempted murder conviction. Burns wrapped a curtain valance around the neck of his then girlfriend the night of Sept. 8, 2002, at her home.

Nadeau's ruling will end Burns' ability to petition the court for a new trial, which he has been doing since 2003. Burns has proclaimed his innocence since his arrest, but prosecutors cited a partial confession he made to a state police trooper to help convict him.

Federal prosecutors will now likely move forward with charges of wire fraud, alleging Burns pilfered most of his daughter's $2.4 million trust fund between 1999 and 2003. That money was part of a settlement made with a Boston hospital, which was accused of mishandling the daughter's birth. The daughter has cerebral palsy.

Federal prosecutors said Burns spent the trust money for bail money, drug rehabilitation, race cars and for somebody's funeral. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in 2007.

Earlier in the year, a federal judge had agreed to hold off on the fraud case until Burns finished pursuing a new trial on the attempted murder case. Jury selection for the fraud case begins Oct. 7 in U.S. District Court in Concord

If I were a slumlord, well thats a mute point, if i owned property in lawrence it would be burnt to the ground with no rebuilding. In the 90s they tried to burn you people out but the arson squad had to step in. too bad. LOL LOl my job is just that MY (I went to college got a degree and work!!) and I earn the money I make. always have,always will. and I can go to Europe every other year for a month and I can go to cali once a year and I can go to main every weekend, I can pretty much do what I want when I want off worktime because i earned it. PSSTTTT Lee, i've said before the typos are just that but youre stepping in way too late lol. My home is MY home, my husband and I worked and paid for it, we put our kids thru college and THEY EARNED their degrees. They weren't given to them because the colleges needed a certain percentage of minorities to pass to get additional funds so they pass them on name race and color. And again; I've mentioned in several past posts. I am a lily white Irishwoman whose family generations back WORKED and earned their keep. NO handouts!!! Why are you so concerned about Lawrence if you do not live there? Don't go by Lawrence if you hate its people and it so much. There's plenty of ways to get around Lawrence (i.e 495, 93). You don't sound like an educated person to me. I went to school and actually learned about different cultures, European and Latin and I liked it .

You sound like a very bitter person to me. What happened Rosie, did you husband leave you or cheated on you with a Latin woman? Is that why you hate them so much. I've seen plenty of white kids from Andover in Lawrence looking for theirs if you know what I mean. Maybe yours were one of those.

i think the "annoying" music you are refering to is called reggeaton, just thought you should know spanish/hispanic/latin music is alot better than your hill billy country folk music, and rock and jazz was created by the african american people down south. but you should try and listen to some tango, bachata, salsa, or merengue sometime, get your feet moving. our music is very captivating. and the older music, altually has meaning to it, and believe me not all latins like reggeaton, my cousins ad older people in my dads side of the family hate it.

Earlier I saw a post on another story about Bruce Willis filming in Lawrence and you should have seen what these idiots posted. The area where they were filming is near canal street. As a matter of fact Real American I do live in North Lawrence . I am also white if you would like to know. I also work fulltime own my own home, run a company, have children and happily married just to show you guys that not everyone in Lawrence is all the same and I have hard working neighbors who are Latinos that also are raising families, working and keeping our neighborhood clean. The Latinos have a right to have their feast and do whatever they want by driving around with flags on their hoods and listening to music they are not bothering anybody so why should you care, you don't hear anybody else complaining when other nationalities have their feasts, parades, and everything else. I go to everyone of them and I enjoy myself it shows diversity. So I do know what I'm talking about because I live it everyday.

really now?? i saw a few, and flags posted up, i went to the south lawrence east school, i was in the fourth grade, and the next day every kid came into school with a shirt with the AMERICAN flag on it, and we stood in the hall first floor to the second holding hands praying. and my grandfather and father are vets, we take pride in this country, even though my gradfather nor my father are born american citizens, yeah thats right, they are both from the dominican republic, and defended our country, when they could have been at theirs. in every home that my parents and grandfather owns, there is a huge american flag waving, not a dominican one nor italian one, but a american one. even in the dominican republic, our home has the american flag right next to the dominican flag.

Hey Rosie to your reply on may we have your address? I live in North Lawrence. I am not deaf. I do not lock my doors I leave them wide open so my kids can go and play in the yard. I do not have my windows closed I leave them open to even when I leave the house for a few hours. I don't mind listening to the music I keep doing what I'm doing, I also don't mind hearing the loud mufflers because I just ignore it. My sister is dating a hispanic and believe it or not he works two jobs and very respectful, I also have a cousin who is dating a hispanic and he also works full time and he is the most respectful person you will ever meet. There is many cultures in my family thats why I think the way I think . I have neighbors who come knocking on my door who are latinos and sometimes they want to borrow a tool for example and couple of minutes later they come knocking on my door returning it along with a plate of food to say Thank You. Rosie I don't agree with people cheating the welfare system as a matter of fact I work in that same building and I see all types of races going in there and some of them work full time. I also don't agree with a lot of things that go on in the city but you can't label everyone who lives in the city. The hispanics have every right to have their feast just like the italians, portuguese, irish and so on. I see Lawrence changing little by little and believe it or not the community is getting involved.

It is assumed that we mean the bad ones that abuse the system. The problem is that the ratio of bad hispanics to good hispanics is much lower than bad whites to good whites. THATS why you get a bad rap. Just look in todays police log. Lawrence arrests are 10:1 hispanic.

Its very unfortunate that it has to be this way but until sooooo many hispanics stop leaching off the system and disturbing the rest of us (ALL races) then you're going to have to keep dealing with the stereotype.

I do not live that way first of all I ignore it all. I do not go on here and complain. I was born and raised here in Lawrence I have lived it. I do not bother anyone and talk to to anyone. I was not brought up to be a racist I actually came from a hardworking family which whom my parents own their home in Andover and my grandparents who are still alive own a home in Lawrence and I have family who owns a couple of properties in Lawrence. How do you know most Americans don't tolerate ghetto music and loud mufflers. To be honest with you I have seen adults white adults driving around in loud mufflers everywhere with their big rims on their cars. Look at these American girls driving around with the ghetto music so loud that you can hear it rattling in their trunk nontheless spanish music. Don't sit their and tell me us Americans are picture perfect because we are not, no one is. People like Rosie bring shame to the name of the many of us of Irish descent who are not hateful racists. I just want to say that many of us Anglos who live in Lawrence are not racist and enjoy the wonderful diversity of the Immirgant City. Bravo to the Hispanic Week festivities, I've always enjoyed attending the activities and celebrating the diversity of this city, my home. I love this city and it makes me ashamed to read the racist comments here. Not all of us feel this way, and it's disgusting that the Tribune has let the comment function degenerate into this. Many other newspapers have moderators that would, for example, weed out racial slurs, like the "N" word and "spic" which I've seen people use freely on these forums. I've always known that there were still racists in the Merrimack Valley but here people can comment anonymously like the cowards that they are. I'd love to see you use your real names or say these things publicly in person to someone of Latin descent. I'm sorry, Yadira, that you have to read these sorts of comments attached to your lovely article. I must say I have always enjoyed your writing and you do a good job covering many aspects of life in Lawrence that the Tribune would otherwise ignore. Too bad the Tribune doesn't have more Latinos on staff, then again, the newspaper doesn't really care about practicing sound community journalism.

roland turcotte was a very mentally ill known arsenist who should have been kept at the state hospital. i DID live there in the 90's and I rememebr vivadly the first "latino" firefighter. His exwife asked, Why is joe on the fire dept he is afraid of fires. That was in the 80's however. many of the firefighters were NOT latinos during the lawrence arson era.I was married to a lawrence firefighter at that time so dont tell me what you dont know of. If they burnt the city down they wouldnt have to be tearing the ghetto slums down now. I am 27 years old and have NEVER heard of people getting shot, stabbed, mugged, beaten and arrested @ the Italian festival. Be realistic people. Let me give some insight here. Rosie seems to be SO HATED on this board, yet she is realistic. Does she sound prejudice at times? Yes, but that's how she feels. I am known as one of the most open-minded, kind-hearted individuals in the world. I lived in Lawrence until X-Mas 87, then moved to Salem NH. I moved back to Mass (Methuen) to go to Umass-Lowell, then lived on my own in Haverhill. With that said, I was seeking cheaper rent and had decided to move to Lawrence. Let me tell you, NEVER will I EVER trust a Hispanic again. I got arrested TWICE by HISPANICE cops for two things I NEVER did. I got ROBBED TWICE, by Hispanics and now my career is ruined b/c of the charge on my record. This is no made up story what so ever. I'm just giving a quick E-Synopsis. NEVER in my life have I had trouble with women, gays, Blacks or ANYONE else. I lived in Lawrence, SURROUNDED by Hispanics and everything around me crumbled. Not ONE SINGLE Hispanic in my neighborhood worked. They all just smoked pot and sniffed coke all day and stole things out of my apartment, little by little until I knew something was going on. How can anyone stick up for these people? They are ANIMALS. It's no WONDER my family told me NEVER to move to Lawrence. What a shame. And for the record, the ONLY ONE RACE I have EVER had problems with in my ENTIRE LIFE are Hispanics. I still hate to be like this, but I am being sincere. I must say Rosie, you do go SO OVER the top, but I certainly can't say that your wrong, b/c your really not. DMA - There is SO MUCH more to the story than a blog post. But all you need to know is that EVERY Hispanic around me was dealing drugs and had guns on their possession. They blamed some things on me and that's that. No further on that issue. They could have cared less that I had a career, as long as they could use me to stash things in my apartment w/o my knowing. Then when the cops got involved, suddenly they told on me for something I didn't do...It's DISGUSTING and HORRIFIC and this has been a terrible part of my life. It was a neighborhood where literally NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON WORKED. Of course I made a mistake moving to the ghetto, however, looking for cheap rent in this part of the country should not coincide with false legal accusations, house breaks and drugs everywhere. You what else killed me: Here is another FACT from that neighboorhood: There was a WHITE family across the street from me. They were VERY poor and VERY uneducated. However, the husband would go through the alleyways collecting 5c deposits from the trash every weekend and they worked almost EVERYDAY of the week. All 3 of them (Mom, dad, kid) would sweep the street in front of their building and keep their trash in order. Them and I were the ONLY non-Hispanics in that neighboorhood. Now, what killed me the MOST is when my HISPANIC neighbor would go down to the Bodega, buy a pack of Newports with her EBT card, then go take her SSI money out of the bank. Meanwhile, I'd be watching this WHITE guy looking in trash cans for 5c depostits, while this girl would walk home to have her Hispanic Drug Dealer in a Mercedes AMG, parked in the alleyway, waiting for her to get her Coke and Weed w/ her SSI money, while she simultaniously smoked a Newport, paid for by her EBT card. The festivities will take place no matter how long anyone complains. I have not attended one of those in about 3 years due to some of the violence that takes place, unfortunately. I always keep it in my heart and always remember the days when I was deep into this week. I think we should celebrate being Latino, period. Celebrating our heritage individually only seperates us and makes us compete against each other. Rosie, there's always a heavy police presence at the festival. That really doesn't prevent anything from happening though. It's really the younger generation ruining it for the others that go to watch the artists perform. My mother does not plan on going this year neither. Her friend's son is blind for life because someone hit him with a golf club last year and both of his corneas were deteriorated. There's a hand full of people that show up for those reasons but the majority want to have a good time.

ROSIE, I completely agree with your statement. I think that a lot of people in Lawrence do realize the criminals in Lawrence give the hard workers of Lawrence a bad name. Believe me they are looked down on. And if you feel fear driving in Lawrence the fear is 10 times worst for those who actually live here.

It is very important to make sure how ever that the criminals get away with no crime. And I don't mean chasing down drug dealers, cause that will most likely result in a dead or hurt hard working citizen and a drug dealer still working in the streets, I mean calling the police when something is wrong in your neighborhood. I'm sure though that many of us are already doing that though, well I hope.

I think that alot of people are ostracizing those who give Lawrence a bad name. For example disassociating with people you know who steal, stay out late drunk or create a lot of chaos out in the street. Or mothers who don't allow their children to associate with anyone who is a bad influence on them. Calling the police when you hear a lot of noise outside so that the people causing the chaos will know that the front of your house isn't a party zone. Unfortunately it doesn't really mean that the problem will go away.

I completely agree with Wisdom too. A lot of the problems are coming from the youth. It doesn't even matter what age they are even first graders are a problem now a days. I think that there should be a law in Lawrence that shouldn't allow kids ages 0-18 outside past 7 pm. And all the local clubs shouldn't allow anyone under the age of 21 in their. And another law that doesn't allow kids ages 0-12 outside alone unsupervised AT ALL and who ever does this should get a visit from DSS and a fine per kid. This would stop a lot of issues in Lawrence.

The real issue here is culture, or rather a clash of cultures. What passes for acceptable behavior within the Hispanic community is not seen as acceptable behavior within the Anglo community. For example, Anglos need to chill out a little and not worry about a little loud music, but at the same time the Hispanic community needs to keep things a little more peaceful.

...at the same time the high rates of unemployment, dependence on social services and criminal activity are not sitting very well with the Anglos. Factor in an almost childlike refusal to assimilate into the common culture (why are third-generation Latino kids speaking broken English with an accent?!?) and you end up with what we have today: essentially two separate societies in the Merrimack Valley, one of which is in all honesty causing a ton of problems for the other.

In my opinion it's the lack of assimilation that's the root cause. Look, I'm a second-generation American and yet not only is German is not spoken in my home, I have no idea how to speak German at all! I consider myself an American, not a hyphenated citizen. Yet many Hispanics consider themselves to be Puerto Rican, or Dominican, or whatever, FIRST despite being born here.

As a result, we have two societies, and as Kosovo, Yugoslavia, the Middle East, Chechnya and pretty much every other multicultural nation has demonstrated...it doesn't end well, and it usually doesn't end well for the recent arrivals.

I would like to see us avoid that. I don't believe it's up to the Anglo community to adapt any more than we already have.

How sad the way we go at each other. The Goverment is to blame they punish people on welfare. They do not try to work with people on welfare they encourage people to stay on it. That's how they want it to be, they want us to go at each other and blame. I can't understand why those on welfare to not fight to improve the system. I'm just talking about Lawrence. The whole country is in a big mess but Lawrence is local to me. People on welfare are supposed to get a job eventually. There is state and local funded day care for the kids. There is heating assistance in the winter to low income families. NECCO assists the whatevers, (theres too many different names they call themselves for me to keep straight) to obtain an education thru grants and scholarships. The Police dept and fire dept have quotas of minorities they have to fill, sometimes bypassing the people who passed the tests with higher grades, just to fill those mandatory quotas. The medical field is crying for spanish speaking professionsals and most hospitals will assist with tuition and what not. The problems are; you have to have some kind of intelligence and some kind of work ethic to be good at these professions. you have to graduate from high school on your own merits, not passed to please the quota status. you have to have pride and you have to want to improve. If those things arent there then welfare and food stamps and alll the benes these people get will only continue to enable the slackers.

Most of my mothers family are red necks living in Alabama, and they are the happiest, most friendly people I know, and they do not care the color of your skin, as long as you are decent law abiding people. The Eagle Tribune Santa fund has every year without fail made Christmas happen for way too many kids that wouldnt have had it otherwise.(way too many meaning its sad theres so many kids) I know myself and my extended family have given since the day i can rememebr givein as have so many of our friends and their families. How many Latinos?/Hispanics?/I have NO clue what to call them...donate? I know their kids get the christmas goodies, how many of the worker bees donate? Just an inquiring mind sort of question.They reap the benes, how many donate????How many donate to the red cross?/How many are big brothers or sisters? And I never did get an answer as to how many students at Lawrence high Graduate.How many that do graduate make it on to college? How many die during their high school years? Rosie, if you wouldn't express your hatred towards a group of people I would consider you an intelligent person. I know where you are coming from though. Maybe one of "my people" did something to you once and now you hold that grudge against us. Let me tell you a true story: I have a childhood friend that was murdered in 1995 by a Caucasian man. Even though my heart was full of hate because of the situation, I never held it against "his people". I've dealt with many Cacausian people that have done me wrong in the past and I will never hate "your people" because of it. He did not do much time in prison because he was a Vietnam Vet and was considered insane. If anyone ever did anything to you, I am sorry. My sister is half French and I love her to death. I will never hate or judge her because of what she is.

I know you feel a certain way about us because ever since we stepped foot on Lawrence soil, it has never been the same. I am truly sorry from the bottom of my heart. I know we definitely have problems that need to be adjusted. I am not going to say "everyone has problems" because I will be the same as everyone else. I am not here to point out your problems although they are very obvious. You may practice your First Amendment right but can you do it with dignity? Yes, a majority of the people in Lawrence are Latino and happen to be on Welfare and Government assistance. Many of us were born here so your argument about us "going back to our land" does not apply to us or even those that have emmigrated here because we were born American Citizens even if we were born in Puerto Rico. From my understanding, deportation to Puerto Rico does not exist!(If it does, please inform me)

I cannot judge you because I do not know you. All that I know is that you are extremely hateful towards my kind and I feel sorry for you and wished you changed. I am not trying to tell you what to do but rather attempting to help you think outside the box and be open minded. Open up for once and let us have a word without ignoring us. Rosie, believe it or not when ever I am paying for something at a register and see them selling anything that benefits people in need, I always give something. It doesn't matter if that's all I have, I try my best to donate what I have. That Santa Fund is there for people who do want to donate. Those that wish not to, are not forced to and shouldn't anyway. If you want to donate, do it from the goodness of your heart. Do not donate and then brag about it and complain about "my people" not donating. Donate because YOU want to donate, don't donate to use it against us.

Either way there will always be an argument. There's an argument about us not going to school but when we do there's an argument about us having to apply for financial aid. There's an argument about us having babies with different partners but then when we do have babies with the same partner there's an argument about us not getting married. There's an argument about us not working but when we work there's an argument about us working a low paying job and not having the luxuries others have. There's an argument about Latinos being uncivilized but the working class families are ignored because the uncivilized overshadow those trying to live an honest life. There's an argument about us not knowing English but when we decide to attempt to learn it there's an argument about punctuation, grammar, spelling errors, and our accents. When we attempt to live like Americans we have people telling us to 'go back where we came from'. I can go on and on and on. No matter how much we improve there will always be someone complaining just like everything else in the world. That's just the way life is, I know, but we need to stick together and make a change. Let's stop being so segregated! The Caucasians back up the Caucasians and the Latinos back up the Latinos. Forget about that and let's back up who is right and who is wrong! I stopped donating to the santa fund when i realized the people i was donating to didnt help those kids themselves.When i found out some of those "mothers: were selling the presents they received from the kindness of strangers. There is no ARGUMENT about your people having too many babies and not getting married, thats what they do. Its up to YOU and YOURS to teach them, its up to you and YOURS to clean up the streets. Theyre the same sentiments the civilized people of lawrence have been saying for years now. And every year nothing changes. Unfortunately the majority of us just dont see that part because as many of your compatriots have said, they left Lawrence. The good ones dont stay. Because i said i worked the ER during the riots any and every one that wanted to critique my inflammatory remarks ASSUMED I still worked there. I dont work there, havent for several years. I do however work in lawrence and have worked on the mayoral campaigns in years past so i have a bit of knowledge on how the political machine works. I dread Hispanic week for more than one reason:
1. In all the years I have lived and worked here in Lawrence, at least 50% of my hispanic employees MUST either leave work early, take days off, show up late, or call in "sick" (hangover excuse). The loss of productivity during hispanic week has been consistant for the past 8 years that I have been a supervisor/manager.
2. Respect for the law is low, and violating those laws is high. Whether screaming and running red lights in the flag drapped cars, drinking and driving, or selling undercooked food, operting food stalls in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, or selling counterfit goods to consumers.
3. Probably the one thing I hate most about hispanic week is that so many older established, hard working hispanics hang their head in shame at thier own peoples horrible displays of behavior. They are embarassed by them and the way they fleece this city, state, and country, rather than build a good legecy for thier families.

What about those places? This forum is relating to what is happening here, in Lawrence. Listen, those employees who do those things, well you try to be tolerant of thier behaivor. When thier reviews come around and they get a 3% raise, rather than a 7% or greater raise, then you point out to them why and hope that they can see how how thier lack of responsibility will affect thier income for themselves and thier families. As far as shutting down for the week??? The companies that I have worked for that do shut down for a week in the summer usually do so in July, and the shutdown never based on Hispanic week, but rather on cusomer orders or if our vendors will be shutting down as well. C'mon be realistic here.
Finally, why would you ask me which business I run? That seems odd and has nothing to do with my opinions.

Thats the one that has shaped my view and opinions over the years. I have shopped and eaten in more bodega's than all the white people in Lawrence combined. I have lived with and among hispanics for years and years. I am not Rosie and she is damn mad. Who can blame her. Hey, it's a free country and proud Hispanic can be a hater and Rosie can be a hater too.
But I will say this, Lawrence is known in the international hispanic community as a place where hispanics can come and get a free ride.15 years ago it was known as a place where you could immigrate to and build a honest good life for you and your loved ones.
Redevelopment and new opportunities are surfacing here in Lawence. And those who enrich thier lives with good minds and honest abilities will prosper here. Anyone else who continues to just bleed the system here will ALWAYS BE LOOKED DOWN ON. And the until those kind of people change, or move, nothing here will get better for them. Is that how they want to live thier lives? Doesn't bother me one bit.
There are the "have's" and the "have not's". And there is is plenty to have by those who want more out of life. But for the rest, they will become more isolated in this city, more destitute and will have no good future here.

Thank you Truth Hurts. It would not be wise to fire half my work force over this. Even when they take 3 weeks or a month off to visit thier home country, I explain to them that it is against company policy, that I need them and have to hire a temp at twice the normal labor cost to cover thier absence. But at the same time they don't expect a substantial raise from me in return for holding their jobs until they return. Some things are give and take. Others see it only as racist.

dont take it the wrong way! i work in the business area, most company shuts down in july because of 4th of july, and also christmas! not all but most. when i ask about your business it was to try to figure it what was the best way for your business not to suffer during this time. there are many reason why some positions will never get the 7% increase, i know that ! that they dont know that, well is part of your job to explain that. I am not asking you to kick them just because, but in any race you will find some people who need to experience tough love!

And when I mentioned those other places is for you to be more realistic, there are worse cities in this country than Lawrence, so I'd rather stay here that i already know the place than adventure to another city which could be worse.

One thing I'll agree about on a previous comment is the fact your employees take a month off to go to THEIR country. Sorry, but that drives me nuts. This is the same reason Mr Laboy will NOT allow Lawrence to start school in AUG. Cause the latin community is in their home lands. SIGHS!!!
I still do NOT understand why some latinos MUST go to their islands during the summer months. I know my kids dad hasn't been back to his country since he came to America when he was 14years old. I better hush, because I have too much to say on this.

In return I can provide a wage in which the comminuty can provide for thier families. When I say 50% one day or the other is late or out "sick" or "no call, no show", it represents those indivuduals who choose to take opportunity given to them and risk it in order to slack from time to time. The end result of which I explained in earlier posts.
It would be less benificial to those more dedicated hispanic and non-hispanic employees to propose shuting down or reducing production in order so that they don't have to be responsible for work during that week. It kind of goes against the "pride" that Hispanics are trying to put forth about their people and thier culture during the celebration, doesn't it.
I would rather have all of my employees just practice responsibility and moderation, balance and prosperity.

Seeing that many illiterate pudding heads running through the streets of Lawrence makes my blood boil! It's like Cuba. CUBA!!!

The food's good, though, even if it did 'indispose' me for several hours. Next time I'll know better than to eat questionable ethnic food offered to me by a grinning Hispanic who laughed and said "Just for you, gringo!" when he handed me the plate of unrecognizable food.

The area attack is the most effective at suppressing a civilian population. I used to use B-29's loaded with firebombs. When we hit Nagoya the smell of the burning civilian casualties was so bad that the aircrews in the rear of the formations became physically ill.

Boy, we showed 'em good! Too bad Lawrence is made of brick and not tissue paper and balsa wood like those Japanese cities. Oh well, on the bright side intelligence reports indicate that the denizens are burning the place down themselves.

I was once told, "you are only as good as the last time people saw you."
People rarely remember the good in us and will mostly remember the bad. Ten positive headlines about this festival will be undone by one act of violence, theft, fighting, overly loud display's of patriotism, drug busts, etc. at the festival. Respect gained thru civil obedience and an atmoshphere of genuine fun at the festival will always have more merit that respect pulled from tolerence. The hispanic community should police itself and show everyone in this city that it is capable of doing this, rahter than allowing us all to believe that hispanics are here to just live off of all the tax payers dollars and live without care or hope for a future for themselves or their families.
I have have white friends in Lawrence who would never walk into a place of business on broadway because of the tension charged atmosphere on that street. But you know what, I have just as many hispanic friends who would also avoid that same street because they want to avoid that atmosphere as well. When people of your own heritage won't shop on "their" block, that should send a messege to that community.
A "better" Lawrence is building up arounf those trouble areas, and soon they will become more isolated and feel more put out.
Why not change your community and rid yourselves of the type of people that you would not want living next door to you and your children. Sure, you can turn the other cheek, but what prosperity could you expect? What voice will you have? Remember, your only as good as the last time someone saw you...

Going back to "Truth Is", some of your comments are truly uninformed and ignorant. Why do you think there is always such an outraged response to any article about Hispanic crime or celebration? It is because people, any race of people, are sick of the garbage dump that Lawrence has become. Many of us are old enough to remember that our relatives, German, Italian, etc., came to this country not speaking a word of English and the prerequisite for obtaining a job in the mills was to learn the language immediately. There were sections in the city where families of each descent made their homes and while it was not paradise and not perfect, people kept their own neighborhoods and the city clean, they worked hard and while they may have still thought fondly of the country they originally lived in, they always showed their pride in America as their home. The words, "back in my country" used so freely now show that recent immigrants still think of somewhere else as "their country", yet they don't mind coming here to received whatever handouts and assistance this country can provide them. Nobody here will applaud you when you bring up the fact that you believe there are some children in Andover of mixed heritage because an Andover resident had relations with an, as you put it ,"Latin woman" who apparently knew enough to have sex, but also knew enough to send the child looking in Andover, where someone who works for a living might actually be able to take care of the child. Don't you realize that while what you are apparently trying to do(state men's preference for Latin women) all you are really doing is stating that some Latin women have no control over themselves and will have relations with anyone. Finally, we'd really like to "pretend Lawrence isn't there" as you suggest, but unfortunately, when you tip over the trash can, the trash spills out in other places.

I don't get your argument. I've dated plenty of Latin women, though, that love a fun time. I must say that this is more of a reflection of their sexual expressiveness and joy than of any deviant plan. Most of the white girls I've gone out with have the same standards but are more often too joyless to freely express themselves. Just a personal observation from women that have dated me, I can't say that me, as one person, represents any statistical pattern.

Remember more is better. I speak 3 languages Spanish, English and some French. I am teaching my kids these launguages, I wish I could teach them some others. We talk so much about learn English only. I think the US would be in a better position if everyone knew more than one language. Most countries around the world have more than one. Learn from other cultures. Most countries will listen to you if you are speaking their language. I have been to other countries and I have never seen them required to speak my language. If some happen to speak my language then I am lucky to be able to communicate with them. They are not forced to speak the language of another country and they usually don't. I also have relatives that have relocated to other countries because of business and they had to learn the language of those countries to be successful.

What some people see as a negative business sees as a positive. In the case of Lawrence's diffrent nationalities equals $$$$. The Hispanic market is growing faster than any other. You could see it on TV advertising clothing, food etc. I think it is great and would be a benefit north of Boston.

Exactly, everytime I see how they are bigging up and DRAMATIZING the 2-way of Essex St., I can't help but LMAOOOOOO b/c they are making it seem as if this is a GROUNDBREAKING AND EPIC STEP to revitilizing the city and making it the Lawrence from 1944, once again. Even the government of this city is on dope. Why else would they think this way? LoLLLLLLL @ the High School already having a riot!! But, we don't see that in the paper, do we? The female riot at the NEW HS was covered up. First it was renovating the mills to BRING the city back. That failed. Then it was building the biggest, most-expensive High School EVER to BRING the city back. That failed. Now, it's Essex St. as a 2-way, which is already failing. Why a 2-way? So, people in BOTH directions can see the burnt-down buildings with X's, abondoned night-clubs and roach invested lodging apartments....

I wonder what's next when this OFFICIALLY fails. What's next to BRING the city back? I know, they should make the Common into a SUPERHIGHWAY to connect all sections of the city, to attrack all the HIGH END fashion stores that are BEGGING to come to Lawrence!!!!!!

Oh Logical, you must not have children in the LPS! Since week one there have been fights. And still do. I hate to say this but....
If the admins/Mr Laboy would of looked at the reports of kids being shadowed (when fights were going on at LHS on Haverhill St and started there before opening up the new school than MAYBE everything would of ran SMOOTHLY. But I must say (being a parent of one of the students that was jumped his second day of high school) They FAILED miserably to keep my son safe. So he skipped school to avoid conflict. (can you blame him)?
By the way, he didn't provoke the fight. He was JUMPED walking thru North Common at 4:30 when all the other Students from all the schools were already out.

It has to start somewhere I think the street looks really nice now after the construction. Businesses will come back if the infrastructure is there. What they really have to do is stop ticketing people up there and instead put in meters and more lighting. That is one of the major reasons that people stopped going up there. One street will not change downtown, the whole area has to be fixed up between Common ST and Canal and all the streets that cross through downtown then a real change could be seen.

There has to be a new way of doing things, the mayor and staff should go to other cities and get ideas on how to improve the area.

The MAQJOR reason people stopped going there is because of the crime and decay that occurred. You can build all the infrastructures you want and put in all the parking meters you want. When people fear getrting robbed; shot be it in the crossfire or whatever, they are NOT going to go there. I think they should double the police department. This business of laying off cops and firefighters when the money is tight is assinine. To leave people without protection in a city like Lawrence is criminal. My grandmother was born here in Lawrence. My father was born here as well. My grandmother spoke English and her native language. My grandfather only spoke English. My father did not learn English until he was in 3rd grade! My grandmother spoke only her native language to him at home, and he was taught in the native language in school until the 3rd grade. I don't speak anything but English, and am sad about that. I speak only a little of the native language and am trying to learn more of it.

The native language I speak of is FRENCH.

None of this is new.


I am also half Irish. When my ancestors came here, they lived in the Irish slums. They had huge families and were crammed into tight living quarters that were filthy. Yes, the Irish immigrants built the 'Great Stone Dam', but they were poor and uneducated and a source of unskilled labor. They drank and they fought. Why do you think that the prisoner carrier the police use is called a "Paddy wagon"? It's because it was used to pick up all the "paddys" when the bars closed and bring them to the drunk tank.

It's easy to look back with rose colored glasses, and think that everything was wonderful. That the immigrants were hard working etc. Granted, some were. But there were plenty that weren't.

Look back at the prison populations 100+ years ago and you will find that the majority of those in prison were Irish. Look again through the years, and you will see that the prison populations change. There is a correlation between who is poor and unskilled and who winds up in trouble.

All of our ancestors were immigrants. We need to understand and help the new waves of immigrants because we should be able to understand what they are going through.

I think the number and size of the mills in Lawrence are indicative of how many past immigrants DID work. I believe the labor stikes in Lawrence are indicative of how many immigrants WORKED for poor wages in horrendous conditions. But they WORKED. There was NO free handouts for them. There were no drive bys, no home invasions, the didnt invade other peoples territories they stuck to their own. A wee bit different from today.The Irish still drink today. They're not out shooting guns and killing kids, however. My how things have changed. The prison population changed when they realized the drunks from the bars were overfilling them and drunkenness in itself is not a crime. Detoxes were opened in the 60's and 70's to assist thoise with alsohol problems but alas the powers that be decided there wasnt enough money in the budget to pay for this and most detoxes were closed across the state. JUST in time for the rampant drug problem to kick in. MOST alcoholics don't go around killing people for money for their next bottle. Drug addicts will do ANYTHING for their next fix. Immigrants past didnt have the crime wave that is prevalent today because of that and so many other facotrs. But You are wrong to say only some worked back in the day. most HAD to work; no welfare, no section 8 housing, no food stamps, It was work or die. So they worked. The new wave of immigrants get more help than any other non immigrant in history and STILL they fail. So stop enabling these bnozos people or it will never end. WORK is not a four letter word .

Listen Rosie, I have lived in a number of cities and have seen worse problems than in Lawrence. Like George said businesses left Essex Street years ago as far as I can remember they started leaving in the early 80's most went south. Taxes and cheap labor are the reasons why they left not because of any crime in downtown Lawrence. I don't know how long you have been in Lawrence but when I was a kid my mom used to take me over there. There are a large number of inner cities that are going through the same thing. Listen if you were smart enough you would notice that Lawrence is in the best position to move up. It sits between 2 major highways has train lines running through it, an airport, a river. These are things that investors look for. Rosie you are like a horse with blinds on you only focus on one thing. I am serious I would love to meet you in a couple of years when Lawrence is back on its feet to see what you have to say then.

I am trying to do my part and I will bet that if I get this going there will be hundreds of people maybe thousands who will donate their time to clean up the city. Have you ever stopped at the exit of RT 28 off 213 right in front of the Methuen MSPCA it is a dump have you seen the trash on the ground at this exit and it is off a highway.

Listen there is trash everywhere some people don't care, be it Methuen Lawrence NH you name it. I was recently on Newbury Street in Boston and there was trash in that area and that is an upscale area. Listen a city will have trash but they usually have a budget to hire people who walk around and pick it up. I can’t remember the last time I went to a city that there wasn’t any trash on the ground. I have noticed that there are only a few trash receptacles on Essex Street and on Broadway I have never seen any. The city has to do its part also and hire people to clean up the streets. If there is no budget for it then let’s get some donations.

The Mt Vernon neighborhood association does that in the MT vernon section of lawrence and there was another group near park street, a bunch of white women started it, the name escapes me now?white street neighborhood perhaps?/Anyway the NEIGHBORS who live there got together and cleaned up their own mess. Theu also had a yearly street party in the summer. Youre going to have a lot of work ahead of you lawrencevoice lol good luck. Its a shame neighbors cant help neighbots clean up the pigstyes. when the 2 aformentioned groups started and continued their efforts, those areas stayed clean. I dont think lawrence will ever be back on its feet. Who do you think will move into this combat zone? The reason that Lawrence stands out so much on the trash issue is because people go through there be it to visit people, work eat go to a night club bar, carnival or just to commute through. It is different then in Andover, Methuen, or N Andover where if you go there you probably live there. What would I do in one of those other communities if I didn’t live there or go visit someone there is nothing there. No night clubs bars, minimal shopping the list goes on and on. People lets think when we post we are dealing with a city which has hundreds of multifamily units and hundreds of streets. There are thousands of people going through Lawrence on a weekly basis and these people don’t live in Lawrence. Let me give you an example we have family in NY, NJ, RI probably in every state in the N East and these people visit us frequently. This is only my family I’m talking about can you imaging the rest of the people who have friends and family who visit them.

Funny, how it wasn't. It was clean. It was safe, Because the people who lived there had a sense of pride. My mother used to wash the hallway floor and stairs outside of the apartment we lived in. She wasn't the only one.

There was a mindset there that is non-existent now. Now, the mindset is: Let someone else do it, let the government take care of me. From cradle to grave. The behavior is disgusting, animalistic, and sad to say, pervasive.

There are some neighborhoods in Lawrence that even if I was given a free house I wouldn't take it. I do say one thing these people you have to get to their heads put flyers in their mailbox to pitch in and clean up. The reason the trash keeps on piling up is that these neighborhoods don't get together to solve the problem. .

It strips the individual of ANY initiative. These people feel that someone else should take care of it. Not them. And they are GROWING in leaps and bounds.

What are you smoking? I have lived on Oxford St. since the 60's,right near the riots. I sweep my sidewalk daily, it's filthy every morning when I get up, these people are pigs. Old laday I feel your pain. Listen there are some who are going to be dirty no matter what you do. You probably ended up with some pigs for neighbors. But I will get to your area don't worry I know where the trash is I drive through there on a daily basis. That is one of the dirtiest areas in the city. The sad part about it is that these are people from that same neighborhood who are throwing the trash.

Start handing out fines to home owners who's yards are a mess. Get the neighborhood involved and setup time on the weekends to clean up. Lets get some volunterr work and involve the residents. That is how things get done.

You are totally right people should start to pick up after themselves. What I am saying is if neighbors see others cleaning up then everyone will chip in. I used to live in the Essex projects when I was a kid and you are right there is way more trash now, but there are also way more people in the area. Trash on the streets is different then trash in yards and front steps. Homeowners can be fined for stuff on their property but trash on the street doesn't have a name and number where you one could point a finger at who left it there. I have witnessed people driving in front of me and just throw a bag of trash or a cigarette out of their car window and they are just driving through.

The cigarette toss happens all over the place and it drives me crazy, the world is not an ashtray. The bags of trash is more localized, granted people from anywhere can be slobs, but it is more of a mindset in Lawrence, maybe when you see a street that already looks like a dumpster, you decide your trash will blend right in. I think there is some truth that more people will chip in if they see a community effort, unfortunately there are plenty others who will frustrate the effort by continuing to be slobs. It's a nice idea though.

I grew up in Lawrence, upper and lower Towerhill. I attended the Bruce School. I can remember all of us kids getting along and having a great time,waiting for the ice cream guy (Knuckle Head) to come by with his treats. Oh! and don't forget the Rag Man with his horse and wagon to collect our trash. I can remember sledding down Congress St and the Rez I miss Hall and Tertins on Ames St. for the penny candy,across from St. August's. I miss Louis Pear'ls for the popcorn before a movie. I miss going to Morin's for lunch before a full a day of shopping at Sutherland's, Russem's and or course Woolwortrh's Oh and don't forget all the great food on Common St. crispelli's ,Tripeli's pizza, Lawton's just sit by the canal and enjoy. The Feast. These were great times. I'm sorry to see them starting to fade. all of these memories happened at time when we we could depend and trust one another.My parents worked separate shifts, so it was hard for mty father to keep me occupied at night. We would go to the Rez and toss the ball or just gaze at the tower. That was a great time in Lawrence. Please tell me what made everthing change?

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe the Stadium and Beacon Projects were built to house our veterans returning from war to help them get their lives together with affordible housing and them achieve the American Dream (home ownership a safe and clean city) to raise a family. Just a thought, how many veterans do you think reside in these projects as we speak?

I have read most of these comments and I just shake my head in disgust. I have been away from Lawrence for several years due to my attainment of a college education and is this what I have to welcome me back? Prejudices and blatant ignorance of people on both ends of this arguement of having a festival celebrating culture. It bothers me to the extent of the "dumbing down" of society has taken place.
Allow me to direct some of these outrageous issues plaguing our fair city inregards to "Semena Hispana."
1.) Allowing peoples to show their heritage and culture is a right afford us by the Bill of Rights. Now if you want to bring up that "these people are not U.S. citizens or 'they' are welfare recipients," understand this: Being that they are in this country and so is the parade, it would fall under the jurisdiction of the United States of America, if I am not mistaken. Also, there are numerous reports that state Caucasian (White) peoples are the largest group of individuals that receive welfare from the government.
2.) "All they do is beep their horns and cause all this noise!" I believe there is an increased presence of police during the festival's activities. With this increase, it is the job of law enforcement to execute the noise ordances (and other laws) of the City of Lawrence, State of Mass, etc. If you have an issue with the execution (by the way, I do not!) direct your grievances to the proper channels. As a side note, do we, as a society, call out fowl when our hometown sports teams win and we celebrate and become rampacious? Hardly!
So I think that those who come to an open forum with ideas of slandering the opposite group is ignorant. Point blank. I ask that you educate yourselves as I do on all facets of the arguement. Then again there is that old adage, "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all!"

1. If White Americans held a White Heritage Parade then they would be labeled Racist and KKK as so many of your Brethren have pointed out in this forum. Also 1/5 of Puerto Rico's economy is funded by Aide services such as Welfare, Section 8 and Unemployment. Also on average the the island of Puerto Rico has Welfare recipient rates that are 72x higher than that of Mississippi which is the poorest state in the Union. So my friend obviously you didn't study Socio Economics and Caribbean Economies. Maybe if you spent the money you might have learned that if it werent for the Unites States and its generosity that Both the Islands of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic would be 3rd world Tourist destinations with living conditions that are similar to Haiti.

2. It also up to ordinary everyday Citizens to ensure the law is upheld to it highest standards and report those who deem it below them with no regard for fellow human beings. Its called civility maybe the community could take a few lessons and you could teach with your new fangled Piece of Paper that says you got robbed by "Overpriced University" So I suggest you go back to school maybe Major in Law with a Minor in Economics and then come back and try to throw some big words around again. I would like to respond and ask for clarification of the first point you wrote. I don't fully understand why Puerto Rico's funding has to do with my point. Puerto Rico, being a commonwealth of the United States is entitled to funding from our Federal Government b/c it is "owned" by the United States. That is a major distiction in comparing it to the Dominican Republic. DR receives aide from not only the United States but other countries as well, for example, Canada. If issues arise, don't label a whole ethicity of people, direct it to the person him/herself. Bringing an entire nationality into the picture will only further exacerbate the issue. We, as people, need to hold those who commit crimes and what not accountable. But, in the same breath we need to show that it is the individual.
Ordinary citizens can not take the law into their own hands, it generates chaos. The jobs of law enforcement individuals are to enforce laws. If it was up to every individual citizen, we would not be a union or nation. So I disagree with what you responded with.
I will say this, I appreciate your information that you are displaying here. But if you feel as passionate as you obviously do on here, why not take it to the next step? Run for city council or something of the like.

As a side note, it is not an excuse that "there are more white people on welfare." It is a fact (I can give you the link to the article). In the same arena, as to your comment that the majority of the U.S. is white, we can attribute to the crime in Lawrence, MA. There is more of a probabillity that a Hispanic or Latino will be caught and/or charged. They are the larger group.

Also, something else to keep in mind:
Race is different than a person's nationality or ethnicity. There are only 3 races but numerous ethnicities and nationalities.

Lastly your correct on race there are 4 main races.. White, Black, Asian and Indian. So why do 80% of the population in Puerto Rico call themselves white and then come to the U.S. and cry Racism … explain that too me and you sir have answered the $64,000 Dollar question.

So if you want to match wits and throw big words around by all means I have plenty of time at work .. but the facts and the numbers don’t lie. Puerto Rico has it easy because of the U.S. so when the citizens of Puerto Rico come here they should have a sense of thanks and not crap all over what we give them. No, I don't fail to realize but perhaps it is the government who needs to realize. I believe if the government changed the idea of being a commonwealth and more of a state (if the US wants to keep PR for obvious military reasons) then change like you have indicated can be made. I am not picking a side per say but looking for how these issues could be corrected. That's all.

For DR, if you have been there you will realize it is a third world country. In most global views that is. It may be a bit better than Haiti but in the tier structure that is out there, it is in the same tier regardless.

PR: We can't fully compare it with states b/c it is not one. I'm not saying it is right or wrong, it just is what it is. It gets benefits without substantial drawbacks. As for the Census takers marking "white" as their race, that has to do with the issuers of the Census and indicating each different subgroup. I suppose they do not do this b/c it is more costly so they just simplify it.

Further, I don't want to battle but rather maybe we as whole can come up with a solution. Maybe we can implement a course of action of alleviate these no sense issues on both sides. I know it is a bit unrealistic and "I have a dream..." like but I think it is a start. No?

I firmly believe that the RIGHT type of diversity makes us a dynamic state, and that a little diversity goes a long way. What makes us MORE dynamic and function better as a society is common ground, and unfortunately the majority usually decides on where and what defines common ground.

["Majority" is not usually numerical in this sense but rather a combination of economic, political and cultural power.]

As for the 'dignity of the group', you need to understand that every time an individual has been singled out as a deviant he or she is defended by the group as being either a victim of racism, misunderstanding or circumstance...even for third or fourth offenses. At some point this rote defense hurts the dignity of the group even more.
