The Eagle-Tribune: Haverhill officers watch for unleashed dogs, owners who fail to clean up Attacks prompt order from mayor to patrol parks

this makes perfect sense....50 for an unlicensed dog and 100 for not cleaning up after a dog

"Police fined Newvill $50 for having an unlicensed dog and $100 for not keeping its shots up to date."

"Pet waste cleanup law, $100 fine: Dog owners are responsible for the prompt removal and disposal of any feces left by their pets on public or private property."

I completely agree. Raise the fines for unleashed and/or unlicensed dogs to $200 as see just how quickly people sit up and pay attention. Sometimes the only way to do so is hit them where it really hurts - the wallet!

As a dog owner I have no problems with the enforcement and even an increase in fines. It is safer for citizens and dogs if they are kept on a leash in public and in parks. Whether on the trails around Kenoza or on the streets of your neighborhood there are alot of dangers for dogs that people forget about. There are cars passing, other loose animals, wildlife off the trails, and dangerous situations a dog may wonder into. Owners should be responsible to their dogs and fellow citizens. I do hope that the city remains "dog friendly" and perhaps investigates a possible dog park where dogs can run free and people are not put at risk. Also perhaps the city can set up stations for pet waste, it doesn't take much to put up a box of doggy waste bags in parks and areas where people enjoy nature with their four legged friends. The city should attack the problem from both sides, punish the people who violate the laws and give the people that want to abide by them options.

Thank goodness. I'm sad to say that my small dog is coounted in the statistics. She was attacked last week by an unleashed dog at least 8 times her body weight. My two were on leashes, this one was not. We were in our own condo complex. Thank God she'll make a full recovery, but she needed stitches and sutures and is a cone head for 3 weeks.
