And HOW can you call this "your country" if you are not Native American???? Didn't the early settlers steal all this land anyway?

And didn't all the other immigrants speak their native languages too? I know my husbands parents did, they spoke Italian...but that's alright with you, I guess, because they are not Hispanic. So much intolerance and hate, it's sad to see.

Actually... there was 2 shootings that resulted from that weekends "FESTIVITIES". One 18yr old died. And the only reason he was killed was because the festival brought him out of hiding and he was shot because of his past. But What Does "Steve_S" know.......

I never claimed to be FRAMED. I was trusting the WRONG people and ended up being charged with Possession of things that were NOT mine, yet it was blamed on me, by these people I trusted.

I have always been a VERY open-minded individual, until I moved to Lawrence on my OWN and witnessed it's fury with my OWN two eyes. How could they have charged me @ 27 years old when I was NEVER arrested in my life? Easy, when you live in Lawrence, your seen as a law-breaking low-life. Sad to say, but it's the truth. Judges, cops, lawyers and everyone else could care less if you were just "Trusting the wrong people," B/c they have the idea "Yeah, ok whatever...EVERYONE'S not guilty." Bottom line, if you want to be SEEN as a hard-working and law obiding citizen: Get OUT of Lawrence...What happened to me could happen to anyone.

Why even bother with all this arguing? Lawrence is a CHANGED city. As of 10 A.M. today, the change of Essex Street, to a 2-way, has COMPLETELY changed the City in the matter of MINUTES.

Now all we have to do is wait for the Monarch on the Merrimack to open so that all the FAMOUS BILLIONAIRES who are BEGGING and PLEADING to move to Lawrence come and FINALLY make this city what it should be.

YAY!! GO LAWRENCE. LAWRENCE is LIFE.

Attack those in the position to make it easier or harder for people to quality for the government help! Those are the ones you should really be questioning. If they make it harder for anyone to get on Welfare that will force them to find jobs and work for what they need rather than sit around doing nothing.

You cannot go down Essex St. any night of the week and shop because all of the businesses are closed at night. Most are not open passed 6:00 PM! The textile industry moved down South. I do not post much anymore because I've noticed this will be a never ending dispute. There are intelligent posters here as well as dumb, of all races and nationatilies. All I have to say is, if some of "my people" do not want to help themselves what makes you think they will change after reading some of these comments? It's useless. There are some hard working Latinos as well as dirt bag Latinos that do not want to work a single day in their life and rape the system. Just like there are Caucasians who do the same. The only difference is that Lawrence is full of those people. There are many of you contradicting yourselves as well. Many are attacking some posters for posting fingers, yet they are doing the same thing. I am not going to name names because I am done with the arguing. There are productive Latinos in this society, believe it or not. The bad will always overshadow the good and there's nothing we can do.

At the end, it all amounts to what is acceptable in anyone's culture. What's acceptable in 'our' culture is not acceptable in 'yours' and we need to come up with a solution so we are both happy.

I didn't say it had anying to do with the migration of hispanic people to Lawrence.
Back then it was simple....
If you decided to migrate to Lawrence you had to learn english....and get a job.....AND THEY DID.
If they couldn't speak english they suffered and didn't get things handed to them on a silver welfare platter.
If they didn't get a job and pay taxes and contribute to the local economy they hit the road.

What do you mean its not easy and luxurious because people on welfare make it seem easy. I work full time and these people who are on welfare certainly dress better, drive around in high end jobs and their furniture are a lot better than most working people. They have more jewelry than I do and are always at the store shopping. So if its not easy than explain please I would like to know.

Again the times have changed the textile mills are no longer in Lawrence and that had nothing to do with the migration of hispanic to Lawrence. I'm not defending what goes on in the city but you can't compare the current day situation to the past. Just imagine if they're weren't any hispanics in the world what would you all do with yourselves???? You would start to blame all the problems in the world on the blacks and asians.

Remember back when all the irish and italians immigrat3ed to lawrence to work in the textile industry?
They faced what all people should face now.
You either learned english,got a job ,or got lost !
Why do hispanics have to food shop with 14 memebers of their family....half of whom are in pajamas?
Why is Lawrence the car theft capital of the entire nation?
Why does the police log contain 99 percent hispanic offenders?
Why is it that when I take a day off and go to walmart I can't find a parking spot there at 11 oclock in the morning?
Lots and lots of "shoppers" are there.

I have regretted those words since I clicked "post" as I do not know you and am not proud to diverge from the discussion to sling insults. For that I apologize and hope you will accept my regret. I know there are numerous people who share the heritage but despise the actions of those most visible within that community. I am a bit optimistic in feeling that good will shine through over bad, and the face of the hispanic community will be looked at as positive. I need to open up my own mind to understand the views of others, as you pointed out that I was quick to point the finger.

Just so you know, with my 'narrow' mind and all, my mother is Cuban. She despises these people more than I do. Because they have destroyed her people's proud heritage. She doesn't understand why there is no assimilation, there is no embracing of any American ideals, and no appreciation for what America has done for them.

She was quite proud to point out to me that for all the different 'nights' they had at the festival...Mexican, Dominican yada yada yada, there was no Cuban night. Perhaps my mother, along with other Cuban-Americans, is narrow-minded as well.

Right, I can't compare crime rates related to this versus st. patrick's, I'm sure there are too many drunk driver's too count coming out of Boston on this night, but I don't have any idea the comparison. I only wanted the angst to be placed on the problems- the crime caused by individuals, probably a lot of gang related tit for tat at such a high profile event, etc., but most of what I see posted is noise, heritage spitting, WIC and foodstamp comments, etc. I would be mad at the festival too if it brought crime to my street, so I can not feel what these neighbors feel. They did bust a chnese gang of pickpocketers when I was a kid, lifting valuables while people were crowded into the new year celebration, when I was a kid, just saying, it happens , again the crime part makes me mad also.

right- those are issues I agree with.

What I don't agree with is saying the Hispanics are spitting it in our faces. They're celbrating for themselves, not against white people. People on this blog feel like they are doing it in spite of white people, like there is a plan all year to stick it to the man. Obviously you have no respect since you feel obligated to cheer on the use of derogatory names, so I don't expect you to be able to open your narrow mind. With the best regards, I hope that you can let go of a little hate. I recognize a lot of the problems that Lawrence and other Hispanic communities in this country have disproportionately contributed too. The facts do not lie regarding crime rates, etc., but somehow constructive change needs to overcome destructive division, from all sides, we all need to look at ourselves whether anglo or hispanic or whatever.

I hear you, as I mentioned there are some negative side effects that have developed around the festival- I agree that those issues you describe should be an issue for all the neighbors, as crime, etc. is not acceptable. My argument is with the comment(s) that this celebration is spitting a heritage in our face. If this was a Chinese celbration, would the same reactions be made? Maybe, I'm not sure, try living just outside of Chinatown in Boston and see how the celebrations impact the neighborhood. It is wild, there is increased crime, streets closed, huge levels of noise and an impact to the entire area. Large groups of people produce these effects. I'm sure there are plenty of people telling them to go back to China too. My point was that celebrating is not spitting or shoving a heritage in anyone's face. Some of these people cringe just hearing the music, because they hate the idea so much. Reality is not so easily stated, but in an idealistic way, why not do a little celebration of your own with your community, whether you are white or anything else, it is actually fun if you try.

Like I said...idealistically, now some of you realists can tell me yes fun, if you like being shot, robbed, blah blah blah, if you use that logic you wouldn't go out of your home for any occasion.
