Wow I can't believe some of you. Yes the festival brings more people and noise to the city but come on this suppose to be a celebration of a culture. Yes it is not your culture but there’s no need to put down something that is not like you. You have to come to the realization that the Lawrence that a lot of you remember from the early to mid 60's 70's and even the 80's is no longer there. The times have changed and I will admit they have changed for the worse but it is not only because of the influx of Hispanics to the city there are many more factors that many of you don't or won't discuss. You are all allowed to have your views on a culture as American’s but please don't pass your hate on to the younger generation.

Actually... there was 2 shootings that resulted from that weekends "FESTIVITIES". One 18yr old died. And the only reason he was killed was because the festival brought him out of hiding and he was shot because of his past. But What Does "Steve_S" know.......

The police were in force Friday night on Broadway. About 8:45 PM....As I was driving down it, there were 3 cop cars within a 1/2 mile of eachother with cars pulled over. Keeping busy enough not to notice the 4 boys (15-16 yrs old) walk right out in front of my truck! I had the green light ME! They were damn lucky I wasn't even doing 20MPH. And of course 2 blocks down yet another! This time it was a young mother with kids in tow....3 of them, the oldest maybe 6. And she did the same damn thing! Even pissed me off more because she wasn't even holding the hands of the kids! They were just walking behind her. Good Freakin' parent! And I'm NOT picking on Hispanic people only.
But this tend to be a HUGE issue in the city.

HAHa...I hate that! IT IS JUST THE HISPANICS! Ive never had a white person step into oncoming traffic then take their sweet time across the street. If you see a white person crossing they are usually walking fast, or they jog across, a hispanic wont look, start walking, see you and slow down.

But you MUST stop for them. It doesn't matter if they are in a crosswalk or in the middle of the street. There is a $100.00 fine if the Police see you shoot by them. If a cop is behind you, you will get that ticket. I never got one but about a year ago they had a crackdown on cars for doing that. If their foot steps off the curb and on to the pavement, I stop. Just a warning for those of you not used to people just walking out straight into traffic. Very common in the city.

Washington, D.C. - infoZine - National and state estimates by race, Hispanic origin, sex and age released by the U.S. Census Bureau also show that the Hispanic population exceeded 500,000 in 16 states.
Hispanics remained the largest minority group, with blacks (single race or multiracial) second at 40.7 million in 2007. The black population exceeded 500,000 in 20 states. Blacks were the largest minority group in 24 states, compared with 20 states in which Hispanics were the largest minority group.
Blacks were followed by Asians, who totaled 15.2 million; American Indians and Alaska Natives, who totaled 4.5 million; and Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders, with 1 million. The population of whites (single race and not of Hispanic origin) totaled 199.1 million .
With a 3.3 percent increase between July 1, 2006, and July 1, 2007, Hispanics were the fastest-growing minority group. Asians were the second fastest-growing minority group, with a 2.9 percent population increase during the period. The white population grew by 0.3 percent during the one-year period.
Overall, the nation's minority population reached 102.5 million in 2007 -- 34 percent of the total. California had a minority population of 20.9 million -- 20 percent of the nation's total, Texas had a minority population of 12.5 million -- 12 percent of the U.S. total.
Four states and the District of Columbia were "majority-minority" (i.e., more than 50 percent of their population is made up of people other than single-race non-Hispanic whites). Hawaii led the nation with a population that was 75 percent minority in 2007, followed by the District of Columbia (68 percent), New Mexico (58 percent), California (57 percent) and Texas (52 percent). Next in line, though not majority-minority, were Nevada, Maryland and Georgia, each with a minority population of 42 percent.

Economic indicators show that the Commonwealth's economic collapse coincides with a sharp rise in the amount of federal transfer payments being made to citizens. Transfer payments going to individuals have increased exponentially, from a meager $69 million in 1968 to over $8 billion in 2002. Disability, unemployment, and welfare payments received by citizens now account for one-fifth of the island's personal income. This massive social spending, which began in the 1970s and continues today, has resulted in severe domestic disinvestment in the economy. Gee, you don't even have to go that far back, just turn on the news, there are plenty of so-called "ethnic cleansings" and such going on. Look in Sudan, Iraq, Serbia, ethiopia, Haiti, the list goes on and on, not to mention the target still on the Jews,in just about every spot on the planet, one group is more than happy to wipe another off the map. hate is universal. I think the difference here is some are just expressing this against the Lawrence population, and not necessarily on all Hispanics. Is it right to put a whole city in one bucket? No, but apparently some think the collateral damage is justified. There are also plenty of others who are justHispanic haters in general on this site, don't get me wrong. Still, many more just seem frustrated with the continuous flow of same-old same-old happening in one particular geographic area not entirely within, but very closely contained by the Lawrence city borders.

I hate to say it but I do agree with some of the things that have been said. I am a proud hispanic and I did get a great education and have a very great paying job. But I do have a problem with people that live off of the hard work of others. I no longer live in Lawrence as I said in a earlier post but I do go back to visit the city because my mother lives in the city. many of us hispanic are very strong willed and don't like to change our way of life because of fear. I agree that gong in to a store like a CVS and hearing spanish music is odd but when the majority of your customers are hispanic as a business owner you want your clients to feel comfortable in your establishment. but us as hispanic we need to understand that we are not back on the island and have to change our ways and adopt the langauge that is spoken here in the US and it isn't spanish. Trust me I live in southern Florida and I run an investment firm and I have many a client that know I speak spanish but once they enter my office know that I conduct business is english. To some of you it may come across worng that I don't like the langauge of my ancestors but what I'm doing is getting my customers use to what they will face if they go to another establishment with a none spanish speaking person available. We have to move forward as a nation we are about to have the first black president.

Actually, I think Hawaii is being cut out of the US, the original signing of the statehood acceptance document was written in pencil, not blue ink as required. Therefore they are canceling the election and McCain will become automatically president, while Obama must now be deported to the islands. Also just in, Al Gore found several uncounted boxes of hanging chad ballots, and he will be installed as the acting President until McCain takes over in January.

The Democratic primary in Puerto Rico is seen as an historical event where average Puerto Ricans are able to cast their vote to select the party nominee for the office of President of the United States. But, they do not have the right to vote for U.S. President or members of Congress.

The Puerto Rican Democratic primary and the increase in the number of Latino voters for president of the United States has opened an opportunity to dispel the notion that Puerto Rico is a colorblind society.

Sadly, racism is as alive and well in the United States and in Puerto Rico today as it was in years gone by. Some even suggest that Puerto Rico is a mulatto society.

In a recent edition of the New York Times, Juan Manuel García Passalacqua a leading political analyst states: “On the U.S. mainland, Obama is black, but not in Puerto Rico. Here he is a mulatto and this is a mulatto society. People here are perfectly prepared to vote for someone who looks like them for president of the United States.”

I disagree with Mr. García Passalacqua's premise. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. As a child I witnessed first hand the discrimination against Black Puerto Ricans and mulattoes . They were the ones who tended the land and did the menial jobs that White Puerto Ricans would not.

When the Hilton Hotel was opened in San Juan, the speaker of the House of Representatives, the late Ernesto Ramos Antonini, was ejected from the ceremony — because he was Black! The specter of racism has always haunted Puerto Rican society. This extends to the politics of the moment.

A conversation with a friend who prefers to remain anonymous, was related to me. He received a telephone call from his mother in Puerto Rico. She told him “We will not vote for a n----r.”

Mr. José Nazario Solá, a board member of various Latino organizations in New York said: “From work and contacts with Puerto Rican social service providers in Puerto Rico, their comments clearly indicate that in Puerto Rico there exists racist attitudes that impact adversely on services to the population.”

Mr. Luis Vassallo, a manager with a company in lower Manhattan said:
“I was born and raised in El Barrio (Spanish Harlem). A Puerto Rican friend of my family told my aunt that she was always welcome in her home, but not her husband — he was Black.’”

I have visited Puerto Rico frequently. I have heard the racial epithets uttered by Puerto Ricans from all social backgrounds against darker Puerto Ricans. Their favorite innuendo is “yo no quiero ese negro aquí” (I don’t want the Blacks here)

Senator Clinton told Puerto Ricans at an event in the island, that if she becomes President she would fight for the island's right to vote directly for President of the United States. However, she “forgot” to tell them that it would require a constitutional amendment.

Meanwhile, back to the Puerto Rican primary next Sunday. According to the polls and the political pundits, Senator Clinton is the favorite to win there. However, the pundits have failed to mention that race is as big a factor in Puerto Rico as it is in the States.

Why is celebrating within a community spitting it in our faces? Are the Irish spitting St. Patrick's day in our faces? Are Africans spitting Kwanza in our faces? How about the Jews? I agree that the festival has brought on the unfortunate side effects of crime, but that is another issue, it is not about pushing anyone around. That is ridiculous. By the way, I was in Mexico during St. Patrick's day, with alot of other whites, and we not only celebrated it by going out to clubs and drinking green beer, but we were welcomed and many local Mexicans had a great time with us celebrating. Hispanics are part of our country, just like blacks, asians, etc etc etc and all have there own celebrations, many that we embrace. Look at how many people of all races go to Boston for the Chinese New Year celebration. Why is it so different for a Hispanic celebration??????????????

I think what the concern is of some people not all on here ...but we can tell who is who in their rantings. The concerning factor i think are the side affects of Hispanic week... Perfect example .. people caught stealing to get some money for the festival. The extra amount of Police that is required to have that festival ... the running of red lights ... the total disregard for others who are not celebrating. I think thats what most sane people in Lawrence who arent Hispanic complain about.

I hear you, as I mentioned there are some negative side effects that have developed around the festival- I agree that those issues you describe should be an issue for all the neighbors, as crime, etc. is not acceptable. My argument is with the comment(s) that this celebration is spitting a heritage in our face. If this was a Chinese celbration, would the same reactions be made? Maybe, I'm not sure, try living just outside of Chinatown in Boston and see how the celebrations impact the neighborhood. It is wild, there is increased crime, streets closed, huge levels of noise and an impact to the entire area. Large groups of people produce these effects. I'm sure there are plenty of people telling them to go back to China too. My point was that celebrating is not spitting or shoving a heritage in anyone's face. Some of these people cringe just hearing the music, because they hate the idea so much. Reality is not so easily stated, but in an idealistic way, why not do a little celebration of your own with your community, whether you are white or anything else, it is actually fun if you try.

Like I said...idealistically, now some of you realists can tell me yes fun, if you like being shot, robbed, blah blah blah, if you use that logic you wouldn't go out of your home for any occasion.

Right, I can't compare crime rates related to this versus st. patrick's, I'm sure there are too many drunk driver's too count coming out of Boston on this night, but I don't have any idea the comparison. I only wanted the angst to be placed on the problems- the crime caused by individuals, probably a lot of gang related tit for tat at such a high profile event, etc., but most of what I see posted is noise, heritage spitting, WIC and foodstamp comments, etc. I would be mad at the festival too if it brought crime to my street, so I can not feel what these neighbors feel. They did bust a chnese gang of pickpocketers when I was a kid, lifting valuables while people were crowded into the new year celebration, when I was a kid, just saying, it happens , again the crime part makes me mad also.

Because EVERY DAY you can't walk two feet without hearing someone's cultural music (one kind). I mean it's coming from this house, that yard, that car, it NEVER stops. So when you have the festival it's intensified. Sometimes I hear loud music coming from THREE directions standing in my yard. When I work on my car my head is filled with certain music. I can't run over to EVERY house and complain. And YES, I want to sell my house and move. If it was quieter I wouldn't HAVE TO. Why are Hispanics so noisy? Why, why, why? What I don't agree with is saying the Hispanics are spitting it in our faces. They're celbrating for themselves, not against white people. People on this blog feel like they are doing it in spite of white people, like there is a plan all year to stick it to the man. Obviously you have no respect since you feel obligated to cheer on the use of derogatory names, so I don't expect you to be able to open your narrow mind. With the best regards, I hope that you can let go of a little hate. I recognize a lot of the problems that Lawrence and other Hispanic communities in this country have disproportionately contributed too. Just so you know, with my 'narrow' mind and all, my mother is Cuban. She despises these people more than I do. Because they have destroyed her people's proud heritage. She doesn't understand why there is no assimilation, there is no embracing of any American ideals, and no appreciation for what America has done for them.

You cannot go down Essex St. any night of the week and shop because all of the businesses are closed at night. Most are not open passed 6:00 PM! The textile industry moved down South. Many are attacking some posters for posting fingers, yet they are doing the same thing. I am not going to name names because I am done with the arguing. There are productive Latinos in this society, believe it or not. The bad will always overshadow the good and there's nothing we can do.

At the end, it all amounts to what is acceptable in anyone's culture. What's acceptable in 'our' culture is not acceptable in 'yours' and we need to come up with a solution so we are both happy.

I didn't say it had anying to do with the migration of hispanic people to Lawrence.
Back then it was simple....
If you decided to migrate to Lawrence you had to learn english....and get a job.....AND THEY DID.
If they couldn't speak english they suffered and didn't get things handed to them on a silver welfare platter.
If they didn't get a job and pay taxes and contribute to the local economy they hit the road.

Attack those in the position to make it easier or harder for people to quality for the government help! Those are the ones you should really be questioning. If they make it harder for anyone to get on Welfare that will force them to find jobs and work for what they need rather than sit around doing nothing.

Why even bother with all this arguing? Lawrence is a CHANGED city. As of 10 A.M. today, the change of Essex Street, to a 2-way, has COMPLETELY changed the City in the matter of MINUTES.

Now all we have to do is wait for the Monarch on the Merrimack to open so that all the FAMOUS BILLIONAIRES who are BEGGING and PLEADING to move to Lawrence come and FINALLY make this city what it should be.

I never claimed to be FRAMED. I was trusting the WRONG people and ended up being charged with Possession of things that were NOT mine, yet it was blamed on me, by these people I trusted.

I have always been a VERY open-minded individual, until I moved to Lawrence on my OWN and witnessed it's fury with my OWN two eyes. How could they have charged me @ 27 years old when I was NEVER arrested in my life? Easy, when you live in Lawrence, your seen as a law-breaking low-life. Sad to say, but it's the truth. Judges, cops, lawyers and everyone else could care less if you were just "Trusting the wrong people," B/c they have the idea "Yeah, ok whatever...EVERYONE'S not guilty." Bottom line, if you want to be SEEN as a hard-working and law obiding citizen: Get OUT of Lawrence...What happened to me could happen to anyone.

"The only thing Hispanics know how to work is the system." TOTALLY FALSE! I know many hard working Hispanic people and many of them do jobs that I wouldn't want to do.

And HOW can you call this "your country" if you are not Native American???? Didn't the early settlers steal all this land anyway?

And didn't all the other immigrants speak their native languages too? I know my husbands parents did, they spoke Italian...but that's alright with you, I guess, because they are not Hispanic. So much intolerance and hate, it's sad to see.
