Look at what happened at Parker Street when the Mayor, the city council and the firefighters were discussing lay offs and budget cuts. It seemed that those big ones end up being vacant buildings. Besides I am not the only one thinking as such. I've heard it from many in the city. Plus who wouldn't go into an empty building to save a life - even if it is a homeless/

city threatened the firing of FF
one lone FF started lighting fires so the FF seemed needed

How did they save the day? They let it burn.

Kudos to them for not trying to save it...Once it's knocked down and declared a "Super Site" and millions are spent to clean it up, maybe the land can be used for something of use.

There have been studies done in bigger cities to see what changes can be done by a municipality to improve someones every day life...Top of the list:

REPAIR POT HOLES!!!!!!!!

It's too late in the season for the D.P.W. to do anything about it, they tend to depend on the snow and ice fill them naturally.

Lantigua's plan is to invite the State Police back in, that will take care of the shortage in the P.D. and depend on mutual aide for any fires, no shortage of firemen and no wear and tear on equipment....Viola, Lantigua really is a miracle worker.

The reality of things is...There is no money to keep these positions filled(If you listen to City Hall), because the city has had an EBT card from the state for so long, apparently those cuts the Grand Poo Bah of Leaders - Duval has seen fit to attack the Public Safety Budget.

I've been searching on an article about the firemen that were demonstrating infront of city hall on election night and I haven't found one...has anyone seen one ??

If not THAT IS AWFUL...they shouldn't be alone in this...and it shouldn't just be the firemen citizens should join in...

I understand that Sykiss but for example if you knew atleast HERE in Lawrence how much money the city is making off of the CAB companies ALONE its ridiculous AND LOOK AT OUR STREETS...my God the streets of Lawrence sadly resemble a slice of swiss cheese look at the Broadway Bridge FALLING APART LITERALLY...What we need to be doing aside from coming up with aplan of action is finding out WHERE the hell the money is going...

There's alot that can be done to put the tax dollars to better and proper use...but unless we work together change won't happen new admin or not...

Reform is needed ALL AROUND...but we need to focus on what changes we can make here within the city first then move onto bigger fish

its not just here tho, firemen and policemen are being cut across the country. we can pressure all we want, the truth is, there is no more money - for anyone. the people who are paid the least are the people who save our lives, and the people we trust to educate or kids. and it will just get worse.

You would think that with all the tax dollars they are taking from the citizens of this city they would have enough money to tear down these "condemned" buildings and relieve the city of these problems...look at what happened on Parker St a few years ago A WHOLE BLOCK went down...because of ONE building...granted it was being worked on but still... It was sad on election day so many people celebrating meanwhile the firemen were demonstrating outside of city hall... Many problems in this city...more of us need to become more involved put pressure on the system somehow... couldn't things like atleast the Fireman's and Policeman's designated budgets be put on a ballot so that WE can have more of a say in what happens to those that are here to protect us?

The Lawrence Fire Department was correct in not sending in fire fighters. All feasible measures should be taken to limit or avoid risks through risk assessment by a qualified officer. No building or property is worth the life of a firefighter.

In the picture you can see a sign with an X clearly marked on the front of the building. Most towns use this system to tell fire crews the building is abandoned and shouldn't be entered unless there is a life safety issue. Haverhill's Fire Chief refuses to adopt the system.

It seems pretty suspicious that everytime the firefighters are having some beef about contracts and salary, some major fire breaks out. When it does, here comes the firefighters to save the day. Another contract settlement.

Seems pretty strange to me that the same thing happened to ANOTHER empty paper mill some years ago... Oxford Paper, across the street from the hospital, closed down in around 1971 and then was hit by a massive fire a few years later. Burned pretty much to the ground, as I recall. Which begs the question -- who held the insurance policy on which mill? Wouldn't it be curious if it were the same individual or group???
