The Eagle-Tribune: Blaze hits condemned Lawrence paper mill

  • luap2 · 2 months ago
Are you sure it was not just a harmless election celebration gone bad :-)
  • Buzzy · 2 months ago
The Lawrence Fire Department was correct in not sending in fire fighters. All feasible measures should be taken to limit or avoid risks through risk assessment by a qualified officer. No building or property is worth the life of a firefighter.
  • JohnnyZ17 · 2 months ago
Smart move by the captain not to send in the firefighters. This could've been another Worcester tragedy...
  • Badman · 2 months ago
In the picture you can see a sign with an X clearly marked on the front of the building. Most towns use this system to tell fire crews the building is abandoned and shouldn't be entered unless there is a life safety issue. Haverhill's Fire Chief refuses to adopt the system.

Lawrence Urban Renewal = burn, baby, burn.
  • Richard_Nixon · 2 months ago
New parking lot for the Roma?! Valet of course so the customer won't have to walk...
  • bird_onawire · 2 months ago
Great idea, how about gondola rides on the river down to the Roma. Or perhaps a leisurely donkey cart jaunt along the shore.
  • Carrot · 2 months ago
    What about banana-boat rides?
  • willmansfield · 2 months ago
    same difference
  • Jmeister1984 · 2 months ago
A bum smoking some crack inside was probably the culprit. Looks like the city is already starting to burn shortly after the mayoral decision was made.
  • precioushottie · 2 months ago
look i am white but some people on here say that because we have a spanish mayor our city is going to burn. this city was screwed up from the start 8 years ago and now he may actiually fix lawrence who knows people always think color is an issue this aint the 1900 hundreds we are all 1 lantigua was our state rep he may surprise you all and fix lawrence who knows he could as for the burning mill that buliding should ha$ve been torned down awhile ago it was an accident waiting to happen but i think the city of lawrence did a fine damn good job on fighting that fire they risk there lives for others and thats what they did
  • XYYZ · 2 months ago
To bad no one, not even the mayor, appreciates the job the fire department does every single day. God bless
  • precioushottie · 2 months ago
i agree did he say well done to them no he didnt all he keeps doing is laying them off and this happens firefighters are hero's and they should be honored by there mayor for a damn good job i hope lantigua is not the same as mike
  • Taxpayer · 2 months ago
Laid off but still collecting full pay!!!
  • XYYZ · 2 months ago
Mayor Sullivan's fault. His name is on the bottom line.
  • Badman · 2 months ago
    not by choice
  • koolaidmum · 2 months ago
Precious...Don't even repeat things like that.
    There isn't a piece of property that hasn't more value burned than sitting on the Lawrence market. Keep the focus on the real issues...You hit the nail on the head when you wrapped up your post...with;

"The city of lawrence did a fine "damn good" job on fighting that fire. They risk thier lives for others and thats what they did."
That statement is the post. 110% accurate.
The rest has to go...including sweetie..the "aint".
    Good work!
    Mum
  • koolaidmum · 2 months ago
Great job to all the fire fighters. We need to focus on the fact that luck was on our side and no one was hurt fighting this monster. I'm hoping like many to hear this morning that no bodies were found.

I do want to know...more than just curiosity sake...but.."Who or what held the insurance policy on this property?"

Face it...You can't give Lawrence property away.
We either have a fire bug out there...bored idiots...or this was the last means for any financial benefit for this property.
  • Larry the Watchdog · 2 months ago
"We either have a fire bug out there...bored idiots...or this was the last means for any financial benefit for this property."

It couldn't have been a homeless person starting a fire to keep warm?
  • koolaidmum · 2 months ago
    Could have been.
I'm not reading that anyone was screaming...
    "There ARE people in there!"
There is nothing solid that this was an active haven for the homeless. Albite it is now fall and the weather has begun to turn and we all know it's not going to get any warmer. People are looking for a wintering spot or just to come in from the cold.
    Kodiak
Look at the outside of the buildings. Graffitti all about. That tells me this property saw foot traffic. "A hang out...get into trouble spot...but leave so your not caught...not a haven ..."
Money or stupidity...either or...we'll hear about.

I'm just greatful no one was hurt or reported missing on the property. That is the most important thing be it firemen, homeless, or bored stupid idiots with spray cans.

The time is now to get all the firemen back on the job. If this incident doesn't push that subject to the forfront of the city's issues of safety then we had all best start screaming.
  • koolaidmum · 2 months ago
Sorry Kodiak...I missed something else too.

We have been screaming and no one has been listening...with any effort to act upon it.

    Note to the FireChief...

Put those men back on the schedule.
The population will back you. A
little show of bloodpressure on your
part would help things along. No
insult intended but until you put
your steel toe shoe in someones
    door with a headline of...
    "Firemen back to work TODAY"
    Give direction.
Your the BOSS when it comes to
fires and your men. Better yet,
    SHOW THEM DIRECTION...
    Be Demanding...

    We've been lucky.
    That's all we've been.
  • Larry the Watchdog · 2 months ago
I agree, we need to get all of our firemen back on the job...I suspect there will be a lot more of these "Suspicious" fires under the next administration.
  • Michelle · 2 months ago
if someone can get an exact address we can look it up in the registry of deeds online...
  • arrival2010 · 2 months ago
It seems pretty suspicious that everytime the firefighters are having some beef about contracts and salary, some major fire breaks out. When it does, here comes the firefighters to save the day. Another contract settlement.
  • Larry the Watchdog · 2 months ago
How did they save the day? They let it burn.

Kudos to them for not trying to save it...Once it's knocked down and declared a "Super Site" and millions are spent to clean it up, maybe the land can be used for something of use.
  • Buzzy · 2 months ago
  • Badman · 2 months ago
Are you kidding me? That's the most foolish statement I have ever heard and borders on slander.
  • sykiss · 2 months ago
wow. I agree with you badman....
  • arrival2010 · 2 months ago
Look at what happened at Parker Street when the Mayor, the city council and the firefighters were discussing lay offs and budget cuts. It seemed that those big ones end up being vacant buildings. Besides I am not the only one thinking as such. I've heard it from many in the city. Plus who wouldn't go into an empty building to save a life - even if it is a homeless/
  • XYYZ · 2 months ago
This Dispute has been going on since July.
  • qazxsw21 · 2 months ago
wouldnt go as far as saying that

but it was the story in the movie Backdraft
city threatened the firing of FF
one lone FF started lighting fires so the FF seemed needed
  • Richard_Nixon · 2 months ago
Good thinking bird_onawire, and I can see Mayor Mensa Mike as either the gondolier or the donkey...just to promote the city of course - and all for less than $20,000!!
  • NoAirMan · 2 months ago
I think we need to help the homeless. ...
  • Michelle · 2 months ago
I've been searching on an article about the firemen that were demonstrating infront of city hall on election night and I haven't found one...has anyone seen one ??

If not THAT IS AWFUL...they shouldn't be alone in this...and it shouldn't just be the firemen citizens should join in...
  • Michelle · 2 months ago
Found it! but the link to the article on the main ET page isn't always there for some reason...here it is...

    http://www.eagletribune.com/permalink/local_sto...

IMO it's a little too short of an article for the topic it is covering...
  • Michelle · 2 months ago
You would think that with all the tax dollars they are taking from the citizens of this city they would have enough money to tear down these "condemned" buildings and relieve the city of these problems...look at what happened on Parker St a few years ago A WHOLE BLOCK went down...because of ONE building...granted it was being worked on but still... It was sad on election day so many people celebrating meanwhile the firemen were demonstrating outside of city hall... Many problems in this city...more of us need to become more involved put pressure on the system somehow... couldn't things like atleast the Fireman's and Policeman's designated budgets be put on a ballot so that WE can have more of a say in what happens to those that are here to protect us?
  • sykiss · 2 months ago
its not just here tho, firemen and policemen are being cut across the country. we can pressure all we want, the truth is, there is no more money - for anyone. the people who are paid the least are the people who save our lives, and the people we trust to educate or kids. and it will just get worse.
  • Michelle · 2 months ago
I understand that Sykiss but for example if you knew atleast HERE in Lawrence how much money the city is making off of the CAB companies ALONE its ridiculous AND LOOK AT OUR STREETS...my God the streets of Lawrence sadly resemble a slice of swiss cheese look at the Broadway Bridge FALLING APART LITERALLY...What we need to be doing aside from coming up with aplan of action is finding out WHERE the hell the money is going...

There's alot that can be done to put the tax dollars to better and proper use...but unless we work together change won't happen new admin or not...

Reform is needed ALL AROUND...but we need to focus on what changes we can make here within the city first then move onto bigger fish
  • Larry the Watchdog · 2 months ago
There have been studies done in bigger cities to see what changes can be done by a municipality to improve someones every day life...Top of the list:

    REPAIR POT HOLES!!!!!!!!

It's too late in the season for the D.P.W. to do anything about it, they tend to depend on the snow and ice fill them naturally.
  • Larry the Watchdog · 2 months ago
Lantigua's plan is to invite the State Police back in, that will take care of the shortage in the P.D. and depend on mutual aide for any fires, no shortage of firemen and no wear and tear on equipment....Viola, Lantigua really is a miracle worker.

The reality of things is...There is no money to keep these positions filled(If you listen to City Hall), because the city has had an EBT card from the state for so long, apparently those cuts the Grand Poo Bah of Leaders - Duval has seen fit to attack the Public Safety Budget.
  • DaGonz · 2 months ago
Badman.... The 527 CMR section 10.13 (7) requires the marking of abandoned buildings.

Arrival2010... you are way out of line.
  • Badman · 2 months ago
Tell that to chief Borden. Thanks.
  • Codycote · 2 months ago
Seems pretty strange to me that the same thing happened to ANOTHER empty paper mill some years ago... Oxford Paper, across the street from the hospital, closed down in around 1971 and then was hit by a massive fire a few years later. Burned pretty much to the ground, as I recall. Which begs the question -- who held the insurance policy on which mill? Wouldn't it be curious if it were the same individual or group???
  • bloggerman · 2 months ago
Damn too bad about the Mill....The apartments we could have done without but another restaurant and brew pub sounded like a money maker...Oh well,
