The biggest reason that they do this is simple.  They expect something to happen when they do this and when it doesn't happen they kill themselves.  Like the kids at Columbine.  They expected to feel something, a big rush, and didn't.  It's a terrible thing that happened and it seems like a day doesn't go by before it happens again.  It's the same as the bully in high school that expects everyone to think he's hot stuff because he beats up on the "losers".
